Touhou Kishinjou ~ Double Dealing Character Available Via Playism In Japan

By Ishaan . August 13, 2014 . 1:05am

Touhou Kishinjou ~ Double Dealing Character, the fourteenth game in the Touhou Project series of shoot-em-ups, is available on the Japanese Playism website. The game costs 1,512 yen and can be downloaded for PC (no Mac version is available).

Playism are known for helping bring a lot of the doujin games available via their website over to the West. Siliconera got in touch with the company to ask how the deal with Touhou developer Ohta “ZUN” Jun’ya came about.

“In regards to Touhou, we’ve essentially been approaching ZUN-san every time we’ve seen him over the last 3 years, and it was recently that he finally came around, agreeing that it would be a great opportunity,” Playism Marketing Manager Nayan Ramachandran replied.

“We’re super excited for Touhou on Playism. It’s a big step for Japanese indie games.”

I then asked Ramachandran if there were plans to release Double Dealing Character in English at some point in the future, and the answer was a “no comment”.

“In regards to an English version, we can currently neither confirm no deny an English version,” Ramachandran said.

Interesting, mainly because the impression I got (from what western fans have said) was that Zun didn’t really have any interest in his games being accessible outside Japan. I think Playism having contact with him for years says something, but I guess he did come around a bit.

The Touhou craze kind of died down a bit from what I’ve noticed from western fans, but hey, better late than never.

Not really, just not as hyped around but still around until the next game of new characters and amazing music

    • Jettythesunfish

He’s had more of an interest in the western fanbase lately, evident in that he traveled to the states for AWA.

I remember him meeting moot, too. Wasn’t that event about two years ago?
At any rate, I guess it’s good if the fans want it and him seeing an “opportunity” now. It doesn’t hurt expanding your audience, but damn, where the heck was Zun in the past 7 or so years when fans were rapidly building outside Japan?

        • Barrylocke89

Yeah, I only got into Touhou after UFO came out, but if Zun had did more pushes after Imperishable Night for instance, it would have been really interesting. To be fair though, while Steam was already picking up steam (*rimshot*) in 2007ish, I doubt getting international titles on the platform was so easy. Just look at how it’s tough for Japanese games to make there way on Steam even today.

        • Sahgren

As far as I’m aware, ZUN didn’t know he had much of a following outside of Japan until the AWA he went to last year. I wouldn’t be all too surprised if the companies that were shipping the games internationally only reported how many units were sold and not where they were sold to.

Well.. 10 years is an awful long time to wait for some kind of hint at a theoretical western release. XD

      Oh! It’s like Mother 1 & 3.
Except only fan-art in manga and anime made it to the west =S

  • JustThisOne

Interesting, isn’t it? He didn’t seem to be interested before. I wonder what changed his mind.

    • mirumu

I can only assume he heard about the beer I’d offered him. I will do my best to deliver it to him.

Being a family man can sometimes mess with your head. And wallet.

      • Barrylocke89

Gotta take care of what’s most important, and a kid should be high up there on that list. If this raises the potential for Touhou games getting an official English release so me and other fans can more easily support him for games that I’ve poured many hours into, then so much the better imo.

  • AndyError

Can I buy this game if I’m in the US?

  • Namuro

    Hmm… That’s quite a surprise.

But it’s just kinda like how The games are first distributed at conventions, then later on, they are sold in shops like Tora no Ana. And now, it’s on an online-shop, too.

The more way to buy, the better!

The thing is, will ZUN make ALL of his games available digitally?

  • Hound

I would kill for a Touhou game that’s easily obtainable in a western market

Better get this primed in case it ever reaches Steam…

Out of region purchases are not locked if you find a way to pay for it (like paypal).

Howdy Isshan, thanks for a post regarding Touhou. It has been quite a while since the series last have a post on this page
Anyhow, regarding the idea of Touhou coming to the West and whether it is a certainty or not, perhaps the info in this post could shed a bit more light, no?

I welcome this move, hopefully Touhou will make it’s way to the western side of Playism too. As apart from ZUN’s own doujins there are loads of other Touhou fangames out there.

Normally my reaction to seeing a new Touhou fan game is “Cool game, shame it’s Touhou and it’ll never leave Japan” I’d like that to change.
