Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Gets An English Trailer For Adachi And Marie

By Ishaan . August 21, 2014 . 2:01pm

Atlus USA have shared trailers for Adachi and Marie in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Both characters will be available as free DLC for one week after the game launches on September 30th, following which they will revert to paid DLC.

Adachi uses Magatsu-Izanagi as his Persona, while Marie is paired up with Kaguya.

Screenshots of Marie can be found below, too.

Don’t read Marie poems without permission or you will have an earful.

    • Sky

But she sounds absolutely adorable when she’s mad..

  • Jin Kisaragi

Adachi is going to the troll character.

  • Jake_Indiman

Great sweetness! September 30th cannot come soon enough!

  • AuraGuyChris

Doesn’t Marie’s presence retcons something in Ultimax?

    • Nice Boat Quatro

I didn’t play Golden but wasn’t it that Marie should have disappeared after Yu defeated the other Izanami?

      • James Reilly

No she is still around and eventually becomes a weather girl on the news.

  • >This world is shit as always

    Sold!

  • God

Err… did Marie just call Yu a love machine? So… is she like the canon girl or something? Or is it just beacuse Yu is badass?

    • Nice Boat Quatro

      Can it be the two?

      • God

Well, the first is a maybe, but his badass-ness is aready a fact.

    • Snorlaxation

she’s pretty much the Canon girl

      • thrak

        Damn,why?…

        • Snorlaxation

Steven Higgins comment, above mine, pretty much sums it up. Who Marie really is, and Souji/Yu’s personas defining who he is as well.

          • thrak

I understand the mythological aspect but there is also an aspect of the plot, and thinking about it, she is not very reasonable choice. (I mean actual plot of course, not THAT plot)

          • Snorlaxation

Considering the kind of guy he is (from Persona 4 and Golden, and Arena), he seems to be a genuine guy, but one who’s slow to open up, and quiet, kind, but also strong, (not to mention a joy for poking fun at the friends/family he’s made). Like a giant stone in the middle of a placid and beautiful pond…? I dunno. Maybe it’s the coffee I’m drinking.

            Either way.

Yukiko has a future tied up in Inaba, which might not be a bad thing. She and Yu are both pretty quiet but resilient, and seem to work on mostly the same wavelength.

Chie? Who knows. She loves Yukiko (as a sister/best friend/more), so she’d probably just stay around Inaba as a cop (or ass kicking bailbonds person). For Yu, they have justice and desires to protect those they care for (who all happen to be the same people) in common, and there’s that thing about opposites attracting.

Rise? She’s most vocal about how much she likes him, but she’s also got the most hectic schedule (and life, possibly, with it being in the public eye). They seem like they’d burn pretty hot for each other (or her for him, with him naturally reciprocating), but that it wouldn’t last for some reason. Or that they’d always hold a torch/candle? for one another. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, and all that.

Naoto? They’re definitely on similar wavelengths, though she could arguably have just as hectic a work schedule/life as Rise, perhaps even more dangerous (idols and stalkers aside) since she’s the kind of detective to dive head first into danger, or at least once she’s deduced/investigated, and her big brain leads her there. I’ve always liked the idea of them having a detective agency and solving crimes together. Maybe as an extension of the P3 (and P1 and P2?) Shadow Operatives? Who knows. (Maybe even alongside the Devil Summoning Tamaki, but that’s just wishful fancy).

As for Marie: They’re both alike in the sense that they’re absolute oddballs. Yu always seems to enjoy helping others, especially when it comes to everyday activites, if his actions and responses are to be believed. They’re a slow burn, but have the potential to be pretty passionate. For all her Tsundere qualities (or pitfalls, depending on how you feel), it’s impossible to deny that between all that, are moments where you can tell she’s drawn to him, for his kindness, and possibly for his Izanagi-ness. They do have sweet moments. But on his end, he shows care and affection through his actions and what words your free to choose, much like with the other girls.

Arena and its sequel is where you can get a more definitive feel for the guy, since you can see what he’s normally like in the eyes of canon/the creators, and how he actually responds to her. If the captions above are true, he might be more affectionate with her outwardly than with the other girls, but we’ll have to wait and see to know all this for sure.

          • God

Well, based on the games, he can be on the same wavelength as anyone, since you choose what he does, but in Arena, he isn’t in the same wavelength as anyone, he is the leader type, so he gets along with everyone, but his personality and attitude (besides the cliche “power of friendship” bullcrap that they now all share (Me, do i hate what they did with Yu in Arena…)) is different from anyone else’s.

Also, he isn’t an oddball in Arena, and while Marie is obviously drawn to Yu, Izanagi has nothing to do with, first of all, it’s the persona Izanami gave him, it’s not really his… and he doesn’t really have anything to do with him (Yu searchs for the truth, Izanagi has nothing to do with that), and even more, Izanami despised Izanagi, no matter how much they changed Izanami in this game, i doubt the resentment could ever dissapear… What i do think may tie them together, is that much like Nanako, now matter how much everyone else cares for her (wich is only friendship by proxy so it doesn’t count), Yu is the reason she even exists… So she has a closer connection to him than anyone else, so the only question is what’s going on on Yu’s head, does he like chie or yukio? Maybe Naoto… Could also be Rise, heck, maybe one of the Social Links! It could even be Adachi, since opposites attract each other… My money’s on Yosuke though.

          • Steven Higgins

Psh, everyone knows that It’s really Kanji he’s hot for.

Kidding aside, as I said above, Marie represents Izanami before she died, when they where still in love. The only reason Izanami despises Izanagi is because he cut and ran when he saw that she was a zombie,.

          • God

Why do you think she represents Izanami before she died? She should represent Izanami as a whole. And Izanami despises Izanagi beacuse he saw her, even when he was told the only way she could revive was if he didn’t.

          • Steven Higgins

Because the final boss represents her after death. In P4G, Marie, Izanami-no-Ookami, Ameno Sagiri and Kunino Sagiri are all aspects of Izanami-no-Mikoto so it makes perfect sense for them all to represent different facets of her personality.

And whether it’s because he ran or because he looked back, the fact remains that she didn’t always hate him.

          • God

Marie represents the complete Izanami, while the others are parts of her, and while she didn’t always hate him, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t hate him in the present, it’s not like japanese gods are not bound to time.

          • Steven Higgins

Still the part of her that hated Izanami became a separate entity and was destroyed. plus throughout her whole S. Link, she has amnesia so she could have easily forgotten that she hated Izanagi and still be drawn to Yu because of his Persona. Likewise it would explain why (in the anime) she distrusted Adachi, because his Persona represent Izanagi after he broke her heart.

          • Snorlaxation

            Yeeeah…no.

            Must respectively disagree, God.

What people have an aggravating tendency to overlook, is that in P3 and P4, (and lightly in P1, and more so in P2) is that the main characters all have characterization that shines through. The dialogue options between P3’s MC and the P3P’s FeMC were very noticeable different, and not just cuz of the gender changes. She was happier, he was quieter, she was willing to beat down the bullies trashing Saori’s reputation, he thought Tanaka’s amazing commodities Jingle was annoying,… things like that which were shown in small doses, but gave you a clear picture of what they could be. And let’s be honest, the people you talk to and the game itself, always tell you which responses are the ‘best’ ones.

All of that is true for Yu as well. Aside from the Anime, all the games so far have been pretty faithful to his character (what little of it was explicitly stated). He’s not all around the oddball that the Anime portrayed him as, but he’s still a cat fanatic, likes magic tricks, is relatively soft spoken, and loves and cherishes his friends/family.

While I agree that Izanagi was NOT Yu’s own Persona, but the result of Izanami’s interfering, that doesn’t mean it hasn’t helped influence the guy, or at least wasn’t something that other Persona users (or Marie being a side of Izanami herself) couldn’t sense in/around him.

As far as Izanami and Izanagi, you seem like you’ve never had your heart broken, which… lucky you. Trust me. But that level of betrayal, hurts more when it’s someone you love. Love and hate are very mixed together in that. You hate them more because you love/loved them. That never goes away.

And like Steven Higgins said, Marie is the part of Izanami unstained by hatred. The core essence of her who loved life and her husband. And who’s the closest representation of that? Souji/Yu.

Those moments with her were optional, but obviously canon. How he feels about her will be seen more now in Arena 2. And from that, more speculation and explanation.

    • Steven Higgins

Well she IS an aspect of Izanami-no-Mikoto and Yu’s initial and ultimate Persona’s are both versions of Izanagi-no-Mikoto Izanami’s ex husband. So maybe that’s it.
I still say he should have had Izangi-no-Mikoto as his Ultimate Persona in Golden, since everyone else got a new Ultimates and their former Ultimate where downgraded to Evolved Personas. i mean, I know his evolves during the Final Battle, but they could have found a way to make the initial transformation happen earlier and then had the end game one be new.

      • God

Izanami despised Izanagi, and he only has that persona beacuse it’s the one Izanami gave him.

That would be quite awesome… but i think it would be better to have him evolve his persona somewhere around the game and still keep Izanagi-no-Okami as his ultimate, but make his as strong as Orpheus Telos was (Even if Telos wasn’t an ultimate, he still rocked).

Also, no-Mikoto and no-Okami mean basically the same, so there wouldn’t be any point in having no-Okami into no-Mikoto, however, they could have changed the name from no-Okami to no-Mikoto, since Izanagi-no-Mikoto doesn’t even exist, and the name was invented for the game (or maybe it was a translation thing).

        • Guest

Only after he dumped her, Marie represents her pure form, before she was a denizen of the underworld, when they where still in love.
And It’s not like Persona never makes two versions of the same persona, Look at the two Lucifers Lucifer and Helel are pretty much the same thing only Helel represents him before the fall. So I don’t see why they can’t make Okami and Mikoto Hell Adachi even has a version of Izanami which represents him covered in the filth of the underworld.

          • Steven Higgins

Izanagi= Izanagi before his journey to the underworld
Megatsu Izanagi= Izanagi before the purification ritual
            Izanagi-no-Okami= Izanagi after purification.

Presumably Namatami had another version of Izanagi, likely with a different name since he got his power from Izanami just like Yu and Adachi so that’s four. Personalty, I think that even though their persona’s where awakened by Izanami which resulted in all of them having Izanagi, their own psyches affected HOW each version manifested, Yu is normal so he gets regular Izanagi, Adachi is a sociopath so he gets bloody Izanagi so, in a way they ARE their true Personas.

Even if we didn’t get it during the story they could have let us fuse it in a New Game + through a triangle spread of Izanagi, Megatsu Izanagi and Izanagi-no-Okami.

          • God

Why do people say that? Marie is supposed to represent Izanami as a whole. And it’s different, Magatsu actually means something different (disaster), while no-Okami and no-Mikoto mean basically the same thing.

          • Steven Higgins

Not really, “Mikoto” means “invitation” and “Ookami” (the Japanese spelling) means “great deity”

Incidentally, by removing the first “o” they pretty much ganged to meaning to “wolf”

          • God

Mikoto is just an honorific, just like Ookami. Izanami is “she who invites”, the mikoto is irrelevant.
            http://eos.kokugakuin.ac.jp/modules/xwords/entry.php?entryID=14

          • Steven Higgins

I still say they could have made Mikoto because Lucifer an Helel are the same individual and both names have the meaning of light bearer.Morning Star. The only difference is that one is fallen and one is pure much like Izanagi and Megatsu Izanagi.

The point is, SMT is no stranger to spitting the the same character into different Personas/Demons. Like Cu Cullen and Setanta, Or just plain making them up like Lucefroz.

          • God

Again, Lucifer and Helel are separate beings, and Helel isn actually something Atlus USA made up in the localization, and no-Mikoto and no-Okami are the same, so unlike Helel and Lucifer, there wouldn’t be any reason to make them separate entities, if they did a different Izanagi for you, it would be plain stupid to name him no-Mikoto.

          • Steven Higgins

You’re wrong. You of all people should know this seeing as how you’re the one that booted him out of Heaven. If you read their information it clearly states that Lucifer and Helel (or Lucefel in the Japanese version) are one and the same. It’s Lucifer and Satan that are separate beings. And Atlus didn’t make up the name Helel, that’s the Hebrew name for Lucifer. And look at Yosuke’s Persona, Susanoo becomes Takahaya Susanoo. Same exact entity just using the longhand name. Yukiko’s Amaterasu and Sumeo-Okami? Sumeo-Okami is just an epithet for Ameterasu. Kanji’s Rokuten Maou and Takeji Zaiten?Alternate translation. Rise’s Kanzeon and Kouzeon? Same thing. The only members of the Investigation Team whose new Ultimate Persona’s names aren’t just alternates for their previous Ultimate Persona’s are Chie’s Teddie’s and Naoto’s.

          • God

First of all, i’ll let you now i have a wonderful bromance going with Lucifer, and second, you didn’t get what i meant at all, right?

I know “Helel” wasn’t made up by Atlus USA (though it’s actually written Hêlêl or Heylel, and it doesn’t really refer to an entity), i just meant that Helel wasn’t in the Japanese version of the game, wich is what a friend told me, but appearently he was wrong, as Helel is in both the JAP and NA versions of P3FES (But not in the original at all), and that while the name for both of them means the same, they are separate entities.

And actually, after re-doing the Final Boss of P4G, i’ve come to think Atlus could have done that with Izanagi, even though it would be stupid, way more than an epithet, longhand name or alternate translation (since no-Mikoto is a suffix that means the same as no-Okami), the Izanami you fight, was Izanami-no-Okami, and became no-Mikoto after fusing with all the fragments of herself, so it would make sense (at least in Atlus’s twisted world) for Izanagi-no-Mikoto to be a more complete form of Izanagi.

I apologize to you for wasting your time, my good sir, here’s a potato for your troubles.

            http://barringtonstageco.org/media/potato.jpg

          • Steven Higgins

It’s fine. I’m just glad this didn’t devolve into immature name calling like so many Internet “disscusions” tend to do. I like discussing things with other fans because sometimes it leads me to better understandin the topic itself. I was aware the whole time it would be superfluous but I really thought he should have gotten one like the others did and Miktoo is the only other honerific for Izanagi I know of and wanted it to keep in line with the majority if the party.

        • Steven Higgins

Ugh. I hate it when I delete the post when I mean to edit it.

          • God

            Happens all the time.

  • Herok♞

Darn they changed her title from Tsundere to Antisocial

    • Jeffrey of Mirrah

I know! They should’ve kept it since just about everyone that knows about “anime” games know what tsundere is

      • Zeik56

Persona 4 has enough mainstream appeal at this point that I’m willing to bet a large percentage of people who have played those games do not know what it means.

Hell, I barely even know, and I’m well more steeped in this stuff than a lot of people out there.

        • Herok♞

@jeffreyofmirrah:disqus Personally I don’t like the change only because they have entirely different meanings, Antisocial implies that she doesn’t get along with literally everybody, which is the exact opposite of her character While on the other hand she is a text book example of Tsundere. I understand the name change I just wish it was changed to something that still fit.

    • Nice Boat Quatro

I wonder if there is a better word like dishonest or a phrase like “the one who never says what she likes.”

      • Herok♞

Dishonest would be a lot more fitting, since Marie is anything but antisocial.

        • Zeik56

Dishonest only makes sense if you know it used to be “Tsundere”. By itself it simply implies she’s a liar.

Anti-social may not be entirely accurate, but it makes more sense as a single word descriptor to a western audience. Besides, don’t forget these aren’t actual legitimate descriptions of the characters. Saying she’s anti-social is about as accurate as saying Yu has a sister-complex or that Chie has discarded her womanhood.

          • Herok♞

Well they are pretty accurate in my opinion Yu spends most of his time hunting for Nanako in the first arena and Chie is the least feminine of all the P4 cast including Naoto, sure they focus on everyone’s worst traits but they are spot on

          • Zeik56

I still think that works for Marie though. “Tsundere” is kind of a full description, but “anti-social” is kind of the exaggerated negative spin on that.

Their titles always seemed like the shadow form of their actual selves. A super reductive but exaggerated version of their personality. So Marie may not actually be anti-social, but if you ignore any actual complexity to her personality and just exaggerate the negative she comes off as anti-social at face value.

    • Rose Spinoza

Eh, I think “antisocial” kinda works for “tsundere” , I ‘ve also heard “moody” used as translation of tsundere. “Moody” which I like the best for it.

    • mckun

She seems antisocial in the anime so far. Like she doesn’t even talk to the cast members and spacey. Its like she’s tsundere/dandere. It bugged me in P4GA.

  • God

So she gives mankind what it yearns for… does that mean if it wasn’t for Minato she would also bring down the apocalypse?

    • James Reilly

That was more or less what her other half wanted.

    • Guest

All he did was treat the symptom.

      • God

        *Spoilers*

Minato didn’t treat the symptom, humanity still yearns for destruction, his soul however, serves as a seal, preventing the beings that would cause said destruction from meeting.

  • ivanchu77

    >worst girl

    • Nice Boat Quatro

Some guys just want to see Siliconera burn

    • RichyGaming

Marie as a character tries too hard to be memorable in my book. But she seems pretty cool with how she fights

  • Shippoyasha

Adachi’s voice is like pure ear sex.

    • All Fiction

It sounds goddamn cheesy, it’s like a 13 year old boy forcing its voice. Usually we get 40 year old dudes dubbing teenagers, but this is definitely more terrible.

      • Zeik56

I don’t hate it THAT much, but I never liked Bosch’s evil Adachi voice very much. He was perfect for the goofball young detective, but once he has that personality switch he definitely comes off as super cheesy. (I don’t think he sounds much like a 13 year old though.)

Although not all of that is Bosch’s fault. Adachi is a pretty cheesy and over the top villain regardless.

        • Shippoyasha

I liked that aspect of Adachi though. He was just a chill detective until he goes bad and he’s just a chill evil guy.

Also, I am sure they hammed him up just a tad because it IS a fighting game after all. Especially for a short trailer no less.

          • Zeik56

Well he seems like kind of a “chill evil guy” by this point, but in P4 he was kinda more “creepy raper guy”.

        • Spirit Macardi

If you get Johnny Yong Bosch to play a villain, the very last thing they’ll be is subdued XD

It’s like casting Tim Curry; don’t do it unless you’re willing to toss subtlety out the window x3

          • Zeik56

I totally support the idea of Tim Curry as Adachi.

          • That’s a smashing idea~!

      • James Reilly

It’s the more high pitched JYB voice of Adachi in the anime to better contrast JYB Narukami. English Adachi sounded much better in the game.

    • ivanchu77

He sounded much better in the original game to be honest, in that trailer he sounded….off

      • God

Yeah, they are probably trying to change his voice a litte, or his talks with Yu would be monologues.

  • Snorlaxation

I’m loving her more and more…

  • Tyler Beale

Oh dear god I hope they fix the announcer’s pronounciation of Marie (when she wins) soon.

    • Zeik56

That’s the Japanese announcer voice. They changed the pronunciation of “Marie” for the English version for some ridiculous reason. I’m sure the English announcers pronounce it like the rest of the English dub.

      • IS | 桂木

But it’s ‘Marie’ in Japanese, too. It’s just the kana is Mari, or マリー

  • Go2hell66

When i grow up i want to be cool like Adachi

    Bitches and Whores

  • Spirit Macardi

I love how Johnny Yong Bosch makes Adachi sound like a demented Vash the Stampede x3

  • DesmaX
    • ALfromHELLSING

lol This is awesome. Love Adachi.

    • Your Friends. Your Drama. Your Life. Your Murders.

      • God

Should have replaced friends with murders… or keep murders and change friends for bitches and whores.

  • Sky

I can’t wait to learn adachi. My favorite adorable bastard who will stomp on these characters.

  • Afternoon Intergalactic

I think I’m sold, going to sub Adachi. There are so many characters that I want to learn… gahh.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Adachi’s back to purify the world of bitches and whores

    http://data3.whicdn.com/images/14966885/thumb.jpg

  • Shade DMessiah

Does Adacheese have a super that gives 20 seconds of stun so he an taunt then continue the combo too?
If he does, well i gotta clear up my sub list.

  • I cannot believe this was Adachi-baby in his High School days:
    https://31.media.tumblr.com/330e6fd8e5a0c74f90d0261c52c7b64a/tumblr_inline_naoexwr5OC1r0s3yq.jpg

    • thrak

The same glasses he is wearing in Ultimax! Damn, there is too many people calling my baby ‘baby’. There is so many people reaching out to Adachi instead of the truth. All shadow Yu can do is scream ‘Nanakoooo!’ and all shadow me could scream is ‘Adachiiiiiii!…’ True desperation indeed

  • Steven Higgins

Umm, did anyone else notice that the announcer voice pronounced her name as “Mary” at the end?
And it’s funny, I actually got into a discussion with someone over Adachi last week., They insisted that he must have been through a ton of shit to turn out like that and that he changed his ways. Guess not.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

Oh at the end he says it that way but at the beginning he said it right, weird.

  • chroma816

Not a fan of Marie, but I appreciate the Poe reference in her title.

    Adachi looks fun, as always.

  • mckun

    Maining Adachi probably with Ken.

Going to see how many people hate me.

    • God

I don’t see why, Adachi is incredibly popular, and even the guys want Ken now, and dat range… ME, DAT RANGE!

      • mckun

Adachi is a troll so people will either love or hate him and people still hate Ken even to this day.

Me cosplaying Ken from P4AU+me maining him and Adachi=I’m asking for it.
