Final Fantasy Type-0 Director Would Like To Continue The Series

By Ishaan . November 4, 2014 . 8:24am

Final Fantasy Type-0 director Hajime Tabata has revealed that the game will retain its Japanese theme song, “ZERO,” by Bump of Chicken, in the West.

Speaking with Square Enix Europe staff, Tabata confirmed that the song—which supposedly ties heavily into the game—will remain in the English version, and will have subtitled lyrics so that fans can tell what it means.

“It’s a really good song and we thought it’d be best to keep the original appeal and impact of it for the fans,” said Tabata. “We discussed it with Bump of Chicken and the final verdict is that we’re going to keep the original Japanese version as it is, included in the European version too.”

“That’s what all the members of Bump of Chicken agreed on so that’s what we decided to do. Obviously there will be subtitles for the lyrics of the song so you can understand its meaning.”

Tabata also says he’d like to continue the Type series of games if this first one is successful, and points out that Square Enix have already filed trademarks for more games under the “Type” brand.

“I would like to make more Type games and make them into a Final Fantasy series. We’ve registered trademarks for it, we’ve gone that far so we want to continue it,” Tabata said. “I’d like to make the Type series the kind of series where we can do the kind of stuff that we really can’t do in the mainline numbered series, so make it a really alternative kind of Final Fantasy.”

What kind of things would Tabata like to do? Well, in an interview with Siliconera earlier this year, he told us all about how he’s fond of history and would like to implement that fondness in a future Final Fantasy game—particularly history surrounding the American Civil War. Perhaps he’ll get the chance to do that someday.

Excellent news all around. I was actually really surprised when I heard Type-0’s ZERO for the first time because I was expecting female vocals.

Did anyone else actually really like the U.S. version of BoC’s Karma where since they had to replace the vocals, they replaced them with an additional electric guitar that was just the vocals’ melody? Was that just me?
The completely different song for Tales of Symphonia’s U.S. OP was pretty whatever though.

    • natchu96

I like both the vocal and guitar versions. I here someone out there actually made a version with both, but I’ve never heard that one.

      • That version was just a fan-made merger.

        • natchu96

          And I never said otherwise.

          Hence “someone out there”.

  • Ni ~Algidus~

Tabata is saying that since the original release. And after that success and ending I doubt that we will not get a Type-1 or Type-negative (I need a game that kurasame is playable when he was a studant and Gen is completely explorable).
Also i love and hate ZERO. that ending was too much for me…curse you Rem and Machina!!!

  • JuVu

Now if only we could get one certain other game with the original, lyrics version of the opening song by Bump of Chicken :)

  • Josh Asher

Oh thank God. Really did not want another case of Leona Lewis My Hands or Charice New World crap. Original song, please and thank you.

And yes continue the Type series, by all means. just not in mobile form. Would love Type-1 to be on consoles

  • natchu96

Weren’t the aforementioned trademarks registered, like, years ago?

I’m pretty sure they had such plans back then too. Still glad they still want to do it.

  • Monterossa

    Yes, let’s make Type-0-2.

    • You’re being silly here. Have you forgotten that they have regstered trademarks for Types 1, 2 and 3? They might go so far as to make more later on. If they keep with the realistic vision of war, we might see new charaters because others are would be dead as disco, or as new generations for the surviving members. War never ends, you know.

    • Richard N

Yes please. If not only for how absurd that title sounds.

  • If he really adapts Real Life War History into Final Fantasy, then I would most likely be the most excited for the prospect. So long as Gilgamesh is still an important character for the Genbu people, of course. Who from history would you want to see in a future FF-Type title?

    • Belial

      and the dark aspect, too.

    • Ni ~Algidus~

Carl Friedrich Gauss. dude would be way too strong though

    • Agito

adolf hitler. why? the better question is why not.

Edit: that’s weird. the image isn’t showing up. well just search for persona 2 adolf hitler and you’ll see why.

      Edit 2: now it is!

      • But Hitler is more likely to kill himself before you even fight him.

  • Alexandra Cordes

If they keep the quality of gameplay and story at just as high a caliber as the first one, I am one million percent behind this.

  • Tarkovsky

Love me some Bump of Chicken. Radwimps for Type One or Type-0 2 or whatever they plan on calling it please XD

Cant wait to play this and im glad they retained the original opening i love some of “Bump of Chicken” songs.

    • You should listen to more of them. They have like an 80% on the “songs that are awesome and meaningful” meter. Fujiwara is a damn poet.

  • Alice

ah, SE, you guys are so funny. At first, this was a psp game only for Japan, so people wanted it to play it with english text. Then the fan translation was finished in August I think, aaaaaaaand it’s cumming to eu and the west. I wonder what the fan translation team thinks about this

    • swiss

The fan translation team already explained some information on what has happened initially SE was already translating and remastering the game and was orginally planning to announce it at E3 which they did way. Before E3 probably a year/months before the announcement they did contact the translation team to halt the the translation which they understood but for some reason the leader of the team decided to ignore SE letter and decided to release the fan translation a day earlier before SE announcement the original release date of the translation was aug/sept IIRC. This resulted the team translation disappointed in the leader for rushing the translation which they were not happy with the final translation, twitting the announcement and for ignoring SE warning.

      • 65daysofstatic

The translation itself is quite laudable though. And while I don’t condone this “leader’s” actions, I can understand wanting to released the summation of many years of hard work rather than have it fade into nothingness.

        • Harry Potter

the translation team is my hero

      • Alice

Ah, I remember this, now that you mention it. I think I read it on their site, about SE wanting them to stop. But thanks, anyway ^^

  • YES! I am ALL for this!

  • KanjiLikesBoys

You know what they should do? Announce 3 spin-off titles right away, on various platforms and then never produce them for about 6 years!

    • Godmars

      Ten years you mean.

That or a remake that will require forty – plus! – years to make.

  • chroma816

I’d support more TYPE games. They’re interesting, in that they have a different spin on many classic FF enemies/themes/etc, and can be explored with an ARPG gameplay in mind, while keeping a more RPG/FF kind of gameplay for the main-line games.

    • subsamuel01

The concept for the series is amazing, love the atmosphere and story hopefully the gameplay pans out. Based on people who played the game, it still needs a lot of work.

      • chroma816

I’m sure, with more games, the investment in world, story, and character will truly help the TYPE series shine.

    • LightningFarron19

You think you people would have learned by now to think ahead.

This is exactly what went through with FF7, FF10 and FF13’s direct sequels/spinoffs. First they bring up the idea of a continuation to the fans in interview and measure the reaction of it by fans. if there is a good fan reaction to the idea, they can measure the global demand for the product. Afterwords, they ask the development team if they would like to continue it and work on it.

If it’s a “Yes” answer all around then such expansion will happen. However, people forget that just because the original game got a good fan/critic/financial reaction, does not mean that the direct sequel will.

I say Tabata abandons Type-0 afterwords and works on a new project.

      • 65daysofstatic

Type-0 is particularly well-suited for sequels, though, if only because of how dense the game’s lore is. Much of the world is poorly represented, sure, and the warring nations all come across as slightly two-dimensional. But the premise is strong enough to warrant revisiting the game’s material from a different vantage, and with greater creative perspective.

        • LightningFarron19

Dude, any of those games had dense lores (FF7, FF10, FF13, Type-0). Just because you have a dense lore does not mean you have the tools to make a good sequel.

Look at Kingdom Hearts. Nomura had an actual plan. Hell, he even added things from KH2 into KH1, whether it was the original game or the Final Mix version. Nomura constructed the original game well and was creative about it.

However, none of the FF games above were constructed as such. All three numbered titles and Type-0 are all self contained and lack any form of real ability to continue properly.

          • 65daysofstatic

The difference with other FF games and with Type-0 though is the amount of historical material that has been created for the game. None of the other FF titles have been represented in this fashion. Therefore, I would still contend that Type-0 ‘could’ conceivably be turned into a series. It has the skeletal framework to support evolution.

Not that it will be a good series if it turns into one, certainly. In this sense, Type-0 is not unlike Kingdom Hearts. The latter also seems densely packed with lore worth exploring, and a story which borders on convoluted unless propped by four other titles to help flesh out its workings and history.

      • Pedro Furtado

Huh? Why would a new project have a higher success rate as opposed to a sequel to this?

        • LightningFarron19

Uh, have you seen X-2? The VII Compilations? The XIII sequels?

Final Fantasy and direct sequels don’t mix well. Especially since they are constructed with being a self contained story.

          • Pedro Furtado

I doubt the XIII sequels were worse than the original XIII, but then I haven’t played them. X-2 sucked mainly because they changed staff, on my opnion. I don’t really see anything wrong with the VII compilations, although I didn’t really enjoy Crisis Core. I think IV’s sequel went well.

Kingdom Hearts also had enjoyable sequels, in my opnion. So I would welcome a sequel to Type-0 with open arms instead of a new project, I trust the staff

          • LightningFarron19

            >I doubt the XIII sequels were worse than the original XIII,

So first of all, I’m guessing you are one of those fanboys who think FF13 was bad, so let me teach you a lesson on reality:

            FF13: 83% by Critics, 76% by fans
            FF13-2: 79% by Critics, 68% by fans
Lightning Returns: 66% by Critics, 59% by fans

FF13 was positively received, FF13-2 was mixed, and LR was negative.

Second of all, you might want to check up on your compilations that you think “there was nothing wrong about”

            FF7: 92% by Critics, 91% by fans
Advent Children: 33% by Critics, 84% by fans
Dirge of Cerberus: 57% by Critics, 67% by fans
Crisis Core: 83% by Critics, 86% by fans

At least 2/3rds of the Compilations was not received very well (Advent Children being mixed and Dirge of Cerberus being negative). Only Crisis Core was a good scored on both ends.

So best not to do the direct sequel bit.

          • Pedro Furtado

I like how you bring actual stats to backup you arguments, sorry I didn’t check my facts, you have made your point.

I didn’t enjoy FFXIII, but I heard many people say FFXIII-2 was an improvement, so I thought it was an popular opnion and didn’t bother to check the facts, sorry about that. I don’t really mind being called a fanboy, so that’s fine I guess.

Still hoping the sequel will get made though. :D

          • DAAANG. you are serving all up in this thread.

            u go

          • True story. Sad but true story. We have some few exceptions. Crisis Core is beautifully amazing. Story, gameplay, characters… But then we have Dirge of Cerberus D:

  • Ty Austin

They’re gonna have a real hard time naming the sequels when the title of this one has a Typo like that.

  • Sion12

Give me a new FF games that plays like Bravely Default and I’m all for it

    • 65daysofstatic

I feel like a monster for saying this, but I can’t for the life of me enjoy Bravely Default. I am hugely impressed with the game’s scope and its charming graphics, but find its combat and story to be too well-worn and rote.

On the other hand, Final Fantasy Type-0 is a fairly radical departure from the standard JRPG template. Having played through 3/4 of it already, I can say that continuing the series could be quite promising.

    • Sultry Sui ♥

*shrugs* Bravely Default was pretty enjoyable for me, buuut I really don’t feel that it’s the saving grace of the Final Fantasy series like a lot of people seem to think it is .w.

        you mean that official fan-fiction?

  • Saiffxv

I like the song and I’m glad they’re keeping it in the game. I’m just wondering how they’re going to implement it when one of the Class Zero members sings the song and then talks in English

    • Harry Potter

a dub song ? or they sing it in japanese

  • I would be interested in the main FF games again if they were more like Type-0. With the other guy sitting out (or did he leave?) maybe this is actually possible.

    • Pedro Furtado

You mean Nomura? Don’t think he’ll be leaving anytime soon. He’s hardly responsible for what is going with the FF series, though. I think Toriyama would be a better blame, related to popular complains.

      • Ric Vazquez

        Ugh, Toriyama…

  • Jadfish

Okay so I just listened to “ZERO” by BUMP OF CHICKEN, and while I think it is a great and touching song (despite the misleading band name), I still would have liked for them to have translated it to english.

The Final Fantasy teams and Kingdom Hearts teams have done it perfectly many times before, so I’m kinda bummed about it only being in japanese this time around.

Also shout outs to Final Fantasy IX for melting my heart every single time I think about it. I only meant to post this as an example, but I ended up wathing the entire thing through myself.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye7BGnlTZmQ

    • Wouldn’t work. No english singer can match Fujiwara’s emotion filled vocals.

      • Jadfish

I’m gonna have to ask ya to listen to the video I posted.

        • Brandonmkii

Some musicians have the gift of singing in more than one language, but Fujiwara isn’t one of them. Replacing him just for an English version world be a slap in the face for fans of BoC and the original type 0 imo.

          • Ric Vazquez

            Exactly

  • Why not? Just include interesting characters the next time through.

    • rem is a precious egg shut your mouth

  • Warboss Aohd

if it ties so heavily into the game, wouldn’t actually dubbing it make sense then?

    • Brandonmkii

Dubbing a song? That’s pretty terrible.

      • CloudStrifeACC

Eng voiceovers singing Japanese seems like a more terrible idea to me….

      • Ric Vazquez

Agreed, a song this awesome from Bump of Chicken? Nope, just nope, it would not be same.

      • Warboss Aohd

oh hi there Sanctuary and Clean and Simple, how are you doing?

        • chocodino

they totally changed the lyrics, they are different songs with the same music [therefore not a dubbing]

          also, it’s Simple and Clean

  • One thing that concerns me about this game is the large amount of character. I think almost all the characters from the FF series are pretty awesome and well developed but this game has just too much people on it and Tabata said that the story is very important and well written so… A good story with not very well developed character? Naah, think I’ll pass.
I don’t mind getting any new game from the Type series if they learn with the mistakes that this remaster will comitt (everyone’s complaining about the camera) and make it for next-gen instead a Vita version or a 3DS’ one. PLEASE.

    • LightZero

You mean current gen because next gen isn’t for another 5-6+ years. But you don’t have to worry Tabata is interested in making games for the PS4/X1.

    • The characters are well developed, if that eases your worry. The development isn’t like, as drastic or goes as far as say the development does in FF13 (which developed everyone a lot imo) but it’s on base with regular FF titles (so a moderate amount per character but not too much)

Rem and Machina receive the most development out of everyone but the rest of the group kind of develops cohesively and with the plot. This is probably the best FF game that’s come out in a while too.

      It’s truly good.

      • Awesome. Let’s wait untill Type-0 HD comes out. Problably the future of the series depends on the success of this remaster.

        • They just need to advertise it properly. It has all the elements to sell really well. Cool cast, cool story. Lots of pretty visual elements that look intense, and it has aggressive gameplay. Plus you have to buy it to get the XV demo, so it won’t be overshadowed by that, since people will actually play it since they’ll have it.

      • Ric Vazquez

        Agreed

  • Harry Potter

if they make ff type-1 make this on vita pleasee T^T

    • LightZero

Not happening. The Vita is a flop and is only doing decently in Japan. Tabata already express a lot of interest in making games only for the PS4/X1 especially now that he has experience with it due to FFXV and Type 0 HD.

      • Harry Potter

yeah i know that’s why vita need exclusives but people don’t notice it senpai don’t notice vita-chan!

        • Ric Vazquez

          Exactly XD

  • This looks great, so I hope it does well (I hope it IS good; can’t bet on something I’ve not played yet). Tabata seems very cool as well; we need to hear from more Square creators – it’s basically just Nomura we hear from (ugh), and A Realm Reborn’s Naoki Yoshida, and Tabata definitely falls with Yoshida so far in being a pretty cool guy who’s open to being transparent with fans. It’s awesome that he was also handed FFXV to finish up, after Nomura spent 8 years… not.

This all sounds like a solid plan. I just don’t see the need for so many “Final Fantasy (spinoff)” brands. This does so many things differently that it should stand on it’s own now; people paid attention to it because it said, “Final Fantasy” – it’s gotten it’s use from the name. Maybe I was spoiled by Bravely Default, which somehow managed to divorce itself from it’s Four Heroes of Light forebear and become it’s own series. Crystal Chronicles should’ve been it’s own series too.

I don’t know why they’re so against building multiple brands outside of Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts these days – or banishing everything else to mobile. Nothing was more exciting in the PSX/PS2 days than seeing what new IP’s would emerge from the company – Parasite Eve, Threads of Fate, Brave Fencer Musashi, Xenogears, etc. They should embrace diversity; they should support more IP, not less.

  • UltimagaWeapon

Sometimes when I return to watch Type-0’s ending for the millionth time I get a little teary when I hear the ZERO theme.

    • CloudStrifeACC

Nah… the ending seemed overly dramatic to me. Crisis Core’s was the real thing.

    • I get like that too ( ;A;) That ending hit my feels hard.

    • Ric Vazquez

I always get manly-teary on that final scene when Machina and Rem enter the classroom only to find….the feels can’t be forgotten on this one

    • Ric Vazquez

This and Crisis Core man…heavy unforgettable feels

  • Notquitesure?

Let bump of chicken be free their song’s in the opening of Tales of the Abyss and its awesome

  • Göran Isacson

As someone who hasn’t played the game, is the story self-contained? does it have a strong ending that wraps up a lot of threads? Because I recall what the last game I played that tried to shoe-horn itself into an already finished story. I still wake up in a cold sweat at night, jumping at waist-high walls but unable to cross them. I did not deserve the punishment that was Dirge of Cerberus. None of us did.

    • Ric Vazquez

      I know what you mean…

  • HentaRobot

Retaining BOC’s ZERO theme for the western release is definitely a wise decision.

  • Ric Vazquez

Wow, I’m so surprised and freaking happy that the song is going to be present in the western version, such a beautiful and awesome song from Bump of Chicken.

  • Asuna Neros

It’d be weird to hear the english VA of Ace singing the original Japanese song.

  • Kensike

I think a lot of fans behind Type-0 would absolutely love a sequel (myself included), but as it is, this remake is totally fine for me. This is very well self contained like other FF series (and dare I say, games like TLOU and Transistor), so I don’t really see much point behind one. Although if some of those Type 0 Novels were translated to english, that’d be so perfect.

    • Kensike

My biggest fear, is that if T0 does get a sequel, it won’t be as strongly represented or as moving as some of the characters were in T0. Knowing SE, they might just throw down another cast of characters in another part of the T0 world.
