Fans Are Figuring Out What The Super Smash Bros. for 3DS 1.0.4 Update Does

By Ishaan . November 19, 2014 . 8:27am

Yesterday, Nintendo released an update patch for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. The patch rebalances the game in a variety of ways, but Nintendo have not yet provided a list of patch notes detailing what the exact changes it makes are.

In lieu of proper patch notes, the community at Smashboards has taken it upon itself to figure out the finer changes made by the version 1.0.4 patch, and are documenting their findings in this forum thread. (Thanks, GoNintendo)

Detailed notes for each character affected by the patch can be found in the thread, and the documentation is constantly being updated as new information is released. If you’re a casual player, chances are you won’t understand a lot of the terminology being used. If you find yourself in the dark, this glossary should help.

    How did they…

    • Go2hell66

lots and lots and LOTS of testing

    • Jadfish

fighting game players will gladly jump into the lab with a character and after hours and hours and hours of trying things out they’ll emerge with something they have found and share it with the community (or save it for the nationals)
They don’t call themselves competetive for nothing.

      • Adrian Duran

        that’s more comparitive than competetive

competetive would be not revealing any info and using that against your opponent

        • 하세요

As a community though, you share this information. Hiding information just splits everybody apart and it becomes cutthroat rather than a healthy competition.

Just knowing information is not enough – knowing how to deal with it and/or execute it properly still takes skill.

        • James Robert Thompson

I don’t think you understand what the word competition means…

        • darke

They’re competing in a social sense. They are demonstrating this knowledge is a show they have a better grasp of knowledge of the game, and a better skill to be able to test and work out this information.

It’s the same thing that results in people data-mining and reverse engineering games; not merely use personal use and enjoyment, but for external validation for being the ‘first’ to discover something.

    • Meloku

Step 1: have a Smash Bros. 3DS cart and 3DS console with version 1.0.3 of the game.

2.- have a Smash Bros. 3DS cart and 3DS console with version 1.0.4 of the game.

III. put both consoles side by side on the Training stage.

      d) start testing every single attack of every single character, one at a time, on both consoles. Compare the results.

  • I really do admire the tenacity and patience of competitive players.

  • Christopher C

No changes for Marth. Nice. None for Lucina. Eh. I think she needs a slight range buff.

    • ZEROthefirst

She has the same range as Marth and overall more damage with her sword compared to Marth (aside from his tip hits). Why would she get a range buff?

      • Christopher C

Marth tips so he doesn’t need to get as close. Lucina doesn’t tip so she needs to get closer to do optimal damage with her sword. the range for the best damage happens to be a bit small IMO.

    • Eder García

apparently their forward and down throws were buffed, but nothing more, both are balanced characters and doesn’t need buffs

      • Christopher C

found out on a different forum but thanks anyway

        *don’t
also your statement is a bit contradictive.

  • Adrian Duran

how are the players in Japan reacting to the patch?

  • Me when I saw the Shulk changes

    • Herok♞

One could say you are really feeling it

      • Riseabovethesky

        But you mustn’t be careless.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Glad to see my characters remain pretty much unchanged. Except for Sheik, ZSS (who seems overall better), and Shulk(who seems to have got nothing but improvements)

    I’m really feeling this update

    • Shippoyasha

ZSS being better… as if she wasn’t insanely scary before!

Really sad to see nerfs for Bowser. It is fun to fight some of the poweful characters and adapting to fight them. But wow at Shulk getting improvements in almost everything. Even Nintendo knows the character was severely underpowered. Even though I feel Megaman is just as bad, but he barely got any improvements.

      • NeptuniasBeard

I can’t speak for everyone, but I have been doing pretty good with Shulk as it is, you just have to gauge the right moments to use the Monado

  • Mega Man can’t Rush Cancel anymore and the damage from Flame Pillar has been nerfed. Air Shooter does less damage but it’s bigger now.

Oh well he had a good run

  • Vesperion

They wouldn’t have to if Nintendo would just release some damn patch notes!

  • Freakmasta

No more bowsercides… My game plan is ruined…

    • James Robert Thompson

You can still use them, just not for last stock; if you get a stock advantage but are high percentage you can still use it to get a low-percent kill and reset your health for an easier third stock.

      • OveReAction

        Unless the opponent is Villager.

  • BlakShiranui

I’m happy Marth’s able to actually follow up on his d and f-throws now, and I’m even happier that Ike got a bunch of improvements on his aerials.

  • Ric Vazquez

There goes the spammer’s strategies LOL

  • Junko Enoshima

SIDE B : Side B off the edge now KO’s Bowser before the opponent.

  • Lalum

“AERIAL SIDE B : Distance has been reduced by 10% and slower speed”

As if Little Mac needed more nerfing off stage.

  • gquain

Savetransfer from retail version to digital version works now with the latest update. Just update and you’ll be able to use the savetransfer app.
Before it wouldn’t work because the retail version had an other version than digital and downloading savetransfer data from the server collapsed due to that problem.
I am just happy to be able to play Smash regularly again after so long.

    • British_Otaku

I’ve never given it a go, is there a method to transfer digital sales to the physical version as well with the same app?

      • gquain

It’s not possible vice versa. Once you transfer save data from retail to digital, the retail cartridge resets. And from digital to retail is not possible due to possible exploits. I mean, you could even back up all your digital versions on your pc and play with them all you want.

  • Jormangund

    LITTLE MAC. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO~~~

In other news, look at all the buffs on Shulk O.O

  • MagiusNecros

How the new Bowsercide works is that before it killed the opponent and left you still alive at the bottom where you could jump and attempt to recover which you generally can’t. Now what happens now is a reversed scenario where Bowser automatically dies(despite Bowser being ON TOP of the opponent) and the opponent can jump and attempt to recover. Which in the case of Kirby, DDD, and Meta Knight if you spam your jumps and use your recovery then they will basically always survive. Along with basically 4/5 of the playable roster with insane recovery and wall jumps. Also the amount of control the opponent has is still the same. So basically it is a huge risk move for your 18% damage and endgame kill move.

So you basically only use the Bowsercide tactic when you are a stock above and winning and even then it will most likely completely flop if your opponent is smart, but if you are winning you don’t need to resort to that at all.

So basically super nerf. And is amazingly stupid. The hitbox for the move was very small in itself and you now lose the intimidation of keeping players away from the edge. Basically giving projectile based characters free reign to be anywhere on the stage without fear.

  • I knew Lil’ Macky Pants was going to get nerfed sooner or later, but hotdamn look at Shulk?! That buff though…

Also worth mentioning Pikachu got a slight buffs on his damage scale too :)
