No More Balance Patches For Super Smash Bros. for Wii U And Nintendo 3DS

By Ishaan . December 15, 2014 . 10:30am

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will not receive any more balance patches that make major adjustments to gameplay. Director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed this in a recent interview with Famitsu magazine (via: EventHubs).

Sakurai did say that the game would receive further adjustments to its online multiplayer over time.

Additionally, Sakurai mentioned that, were any glaring issues to be found within the game, naturally, those would be addressed in a future patch.

    Greninja kills Charizard.
    >__> *Waits for the charizard fans riding on their charizards as some mega evolve their charizards into mega CHARIZARD*

  • Tijani Palmer

I understand the situation Sakurai is in at the moment, seeing as how he got a heavy injury in his hand during development and he just announced mewtwo for dlc. Chances are that he just wants to get everything done with the game and take a vacation.

    • subsamuel01

I think he’s getting tired of working on the same franchise for so long, he did say that these smash games were going to be his last.

      • Last game, or last Smash?

        • Lalum

Even if Sakurai is off, there’s no way Nintendo would let this be the last Smash. Expect more next console/handheld generation.

          • You’re right. Doubt this is the last Smash, just curious to know if it will be his last game period.

          • subsamuel01

I highly doubt its his last game, I just think its his last Smash Bros. game. I mean he’s been working on them since the N64 days, I’m sure he has franchise fatigue.

        • subsamuel01

Sakurai said that Smash bros. Wii U and 3DS might be the last Smash. There’s no way Nintendo would stop making Smash Bros. games its one of their largest IP. Sakura did say its the last Smash he’s going to work on.

  • J_Joestar

i kinda wonder what constitutes Major or Minor adjustments…

    • Tijani Palmer

Probably major adjustments would be certain glitches that could be game breaking and minor adjustments would be small glitches and online bug fixes.

      • J_Joestar

maybe, but it says it in reference to balance. I’d imagine that any significant glitch would be at the top of the list for corrections.

  • Wtf so we stuck with diddy’s bullshit?

    • Tijani Palmer

Adapt to it. I usually don’t have a problem with Diddy players when I realize they do the same shit all game, but that’s just me.

      • True but that god damn uair gives me to much salt

        • Tijani Palmer

I understand. That bullshit hitstun on the down throw makes me so furious at times. Gotta mash the A button to get out of a up air to the blast zone

    • jugss

Is Rosalina top tier? I heard she got nerfed.

      • Tijani Palmer

Right now, we can say that she is still top tier, but she is easier to deal with after this balance update.

      • ZEROthefirst

She’s still unbalanced, but much easier to deal with after the nerf.

      • Pedro Rosas

I don’t believe on tiers but a good Rosalina player can give you such a pain in the ass that you won’t know what happened most of the time. I use Rosalina so I should know.

  • NeptuniasBeard

That’s a shame. Ganondorf is still top tier OP.

    • triablos

What happened to ganondorf? Last I remember we were calling him craptain falcondorf

    • Tijani Palmer

What do you expect? The man mains him.

    • Raymond

I have beat every Ganondorf with olimar……so he can’t be that top rier

      • Hyero

I’ve completely decimated every Olimar with Ganondorf. Weird.

Then again, running into a good olimar is almost like running into a unicorn.

        • 古戸ヱリカ

So what happens when a Ganondorf beating Olimar fights an Olimar decimating Ganondorf?

          • ForteWily

I have no idea, but that is how fighting game tiers work for the most part.

Take the best player with X character with the best player with Y character, have 10 or so matches and remove the human element (which allows for unpredictability)…..

Then it becomes a discussion on what characters are the best based on how they fair on this kind of evaluation.

You hath never played with Ike in this game before. >.<

    • Go2hell66

      except that he sucks

  • ivanchu77

How´s rosalina in this version? is she still viable after the nerf?

    • ZEROthefirst

She’s still unbalanced, but much easier to deal with now after the nerf.

  • triablos

Dedede didn’t get enough Sakurai bias :(

  • Hyero

Well there go my hopes and dreams of seeing Diddy getting nerfed, Little Mac getting his super armor tweaked, Falco becoming good, Charizard getting good, MK upgrading from his Nerf sword, and Palutena getting faster attacks.

I’ll have to find a way to live with it I guess.

    • Pedro Rosas

I could counter so many of this but I just have to give you some advice:

      Stop sucking.

    • Codi Schumacher

The only problem Charizard has to me is the side special being a self damaging move aside from that its great.

  • Shippoyasha

I don’t see a point in them announcing that. Balances patching is good. Maybe something is lost in translation.

    • Darknut

It’s not really an announcement, and the key word is major patches, and that’s assuming no major bugs pop up. They’ll likely still tweak but be more conservative, and if there is an issue they think they need to address then they obviously will.

    • lunier

Not at the rate they were going

If something seems ‘broken’ at that instance doesn’t mean it should be balanced out right away.

  • Ah well. I’ll still play as Palutena and Wii Fit Trainer, even if they never become worthwhile characters.

I always end up favouring the worst rated characters in Smash games for some reason.

    • 하세요

I think Wii Fit Trainer is solid, just quirky to master. She certainly doesn’t play like traditional characters.

      • She is solid, but I’m simply not good enough at the game to do decent with her or anybody else really.

        • 하세요

I hear ya. I consider myself pretty good, but I don’t sit down enough and play it daily anymore so my skills are limited. I used to play the shit out of Melee and Brawl, but now…it’s tough to. Not that this game isn’t better or worse, just realized I have other options.

    • kaisergali

Regardless tiers I always play wih the characters I enjoy the most. You only worry about tiers if you are competing in a real tournament with cash prizes, if not play and have fun.

  • Christopher C

makes sense, a million people testing the balance provides better feedback than say 1000.

  • FivePointedTheStar

I wonder how much time and money it costs to keep developing patches for Smash4. Nintendo probably doesn’t think its worthwhile to keep support compared to how much it costs. They probably want to put their resources into other games.

    • Derek E Nay

I don’t think money is the issue, though it may have some hand in it. I think it has to do with Sakurai.

  • KyoyaHibari

So at this stage are the characters fairly leveled then? I heard pre-patch Little Mac and Greninja kind of trumped the others, but I’m not too sure. Any verdict? (Don’t have the game yet).

    • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Diddy has a ridiculous combo ability that kills some of the earliest in the entire game. Though most Diddy’s are predictable, if one is good at Mix-Up’s, you lost.
Olimar is bottom-line shit. Charizard can barely do anything except aggressive grab/throw/spike game. There are things that should be addressed at least sometime in the future.
Also Mac and Greninja got the nerf hammer pretty good. Enough that they don’t murder everyone with ridiculous abilities now.

      • HarakiriKami

        I think you’re actually a scrub lmao

Mac was never good, why would he get nerfed? He suicides a majority of the time and a good player will basically take their time and keep in the middle of the stage/ go in the air a couple times then go back to the ground to use one of their kill moves or use one of the few non-nerfed moves he has in the air

        • DaiRaiOh

Mac got the one nerf he needed, in them nerfing his neutral A combo on account of it doing 35% or so in vanilla. He may be bad, but that was just way too high of a damage rate for a move like that.

    • Codi Schumacher

That sounds like it could just as easily be an issue like people complaining due to lack of skill or a lag issue.

  • Arrei

That’s honestly pretty disappointing. We only get one balance patch, and nothing to address how some characters have disgustingly-easy combos at low percent?

    • Codi Schumacher

Character balance and combos arent worth a patch or and update. Stuff like how WII fit trainer can hardly aim in the right direction to launch an attack or how the invisibility item in smash tour works too well and is more a liability than an asset are the kinds of things that need fixing

      • HarakiriKami

Wii fit trainer is dangerous dude. NO.

        • Codi Schumacher

I dont buy that for a split second

          • Derek

It’s true. WFT is really, REALLY good if you get the hang of her. She’s my best character at this point and I win the majority of my online matches with her, frequently without losing a stock.

          • Codi Schumacher

I play as a wide range of characters and shes not so great at all. In fact about the only character just as bad if not worse is Shulk.

          • Derek

I also play quite a few characters (Peach, WFT, Lucina, Bowser Jr, Duck Hunt, Samus, ZSS, Rosalina, Little Mac, Mario, Ike, Robin, Captain Falcon, Mega Man, Palutena, ROB, Sheik, Shulk, and Zelda).

Peach and WFT are my two best characters with MM, Little Mac, and Lucina not far behind. Shulk isn’t terrible either, certainly not the worst character in the game. Maybe WFT just doesn’t fit your play style or something (like Dedede for me; I’ve played some great Dedede players, but I can’t get good with him because I’m not good with heavy characters like that), but she’s a perfectly valid character for competitive play.

          • Codi Schumacher

My best would be Megaman, Villager, Charizard, and Lucario. I also find Rosalina&Luma to be enjoyable along with Wario and Robin. I played Mewtwo in the past and expect to find it favorable when made available as a potential major character.

          • HarakiriKami

Not to many people actually play as her so your ignorance is forgiven.

But one moment with a buddy of mine and he’ll wreck you shit. He’s great with all the unorthodox smash characters

          • Codi Schumacher

Its not ignorance I have tried all the fighters out.

          • HarakiriKami

Oh you dont know how she plays then.

      • Arrei

Balance isn’t worth an update when it’s what makes or breaks a fighting game’s viability? How do you figure? A discrepancy between some characters needing to play well to land combos and a character like Mario being able to rack up ~40% of damage just by using down throw and doing up-tilt over and over with no chance of getting out of it once it starts sounds like a pretty severe failing, to me.

        • Codi Schumacher

I stand by what I said.

  • ForteWily

Maybe it’s just me, but at this point… I agree with this. Smash was only just released a few weeks ago. I don’t see the point of expending resources on attempting to make the game balanced when so much is in flux right now… maybe we’ll see something in like 6-9 months but unless it’s game braking or hurts on-line (there was a Peach bug that got people banned from “For Glory” a while back, 1.0.3 addresses this, I think) I can’t really see the point on wasting the money.

I would wait for a few things to be discovered first, give it some time to be decrypted before jumping into something like a massive balance patch. And even then, it’s quite clear that there are going to be some skewed priorities if (or when) such a patch is announced… most of the community would demand things to be changed based on 1v1 fights and match-up, mostly. Smash is built, and always was built since it’s inception, with “4 man” muilt-player in mind… Sakurai would balance with that in mind, first and foremost.

  • AuraGuyChris

    Charizard: N-no more…patches?

Greninja: I’ll give you a patch…FOR YOUR WOUNDED BELLY, GERO!

  • Joy Killer

Good! They must be moving on from working on the patches to the Tourney update.

Also, not to sound like a greedy jerk, I hope Sakurai and his team get a nice vacation too.

  • Veloze

D-Does this mean there will be no end to Diddy Kong’s reign of terror?

    • SlickRoach

Explain. What’s up with Diddy in this game?

      • Go2hell66

he’s pretty damn good, not unbeatable. Ness on the other hand. omg people don’t know about ness yet

        • 하세요

Pfft, people do. He’s everywhere online now. I thought I was doing something serious then just now one was whoopin’ me. Oddly, he could not beat my Luigi, who I use more casually but now will try to use far more often.

Don’t be fooled though – Ness’s D-Throw into F-Air nonsense is somewhat online only. It’s fairly easy to tech / avoid when playing offline, but online natural input delay makes it tough to avoid. Same with Ganon’s Side-B into D-Tilt, Peach’s D-Throw into B-Air, etc.

          • Personally I just find the online mode to be chock full of these heavy hitters. You tend to see these characters pop up more then any other. It’s literally Ike, Charizard, Captain Falcon, Little Mac, Shiek, ect.

You don’t have to land many hits, but when they do it makes up for any sloppy playing. It’s not unmanageable, but it still feels like a slap in the face when you play as Pit and you get Charizard up to 130% damage and still can’t launch him, but Charizard can launch you at 75-100% with pretty much any smash attack.

Honestly though I’m glad that they gave pit the Upperdash Arm. It helped give him a bit more muscle (although unfortunately it can still have troubles launching/finishing an opponent who is at 100% still).

  • Smash 3DS has had 3 or 4 patches.

    • 하세요

Those were to essentially keep up with the Wii-U version, though,

  • Keiji Johnson

Wish they could’ve made a patch to improve Little Mac’s attacks. He was considered the worst fighter in the game and they made him even worst after they nerfed him even further in the 3DS version with that patch. Which is a shame since I liked playing as him along with others.

  • Fintlook

Well a fighting game isn’t a mmo; I think it’s a good thing that we can concentrate on the actual game rather than just fear ours characters get nerfed or a new diddy every patch.
