Steins;Gate Is Coming To PlayStation 3 And Vita In English [Update]

By Ishaan . December 16, 2014 . 2:12am

Steins;Gate is being released for the PlayStation 3 and Vita in English, publisher PQube announced today. The visual novel will be released in 2015 in both North America and Europe.

Steins;Gate was released on PC in March 2014 by JAST USA. Siliconera asked Geraint Evans of PQube if the PlayStation version would use the translation from the PC version, and he replied that the build of the game PQube have received came directly from MAGES, so at this point, it’s unclear if it uses the same translation.

I also asked Evans if the game would be released via retail channels or as a digital release. He replied, “I’m personally against digital-only releases, so I will do my very best to ensure a physical release happens. I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.”

I will be picking this up ASAP! Let’s hope NZGameshop holds preorders!

  • WHAAAAAAAAT?!?!!?!?

  • EtherealEarth

I will probably pick the PSV one so I can read it while traveling around (already bought and played the PC version).

I hope there’s a physical limited edition for me to snatch~

  • David García Abril

    Most probably on Vita.

I watched the anime recently and it went straight to my personal Top 5! One of the best science fiction stories I’ve ever seen, with a touching, heartbreaking love story to boot.

Any word on if it will be translated to other languages apart from English in Europe?

If you need a translator for Spanish, give me a call, PQube! lol

  • Smiech

The only reason I held back from playing this visual novel was with the small hope that we’d see this come to vita! I’ll be damned! Let’s friggin’ do this!

    • zєxɪσи

Me ,too . *sob* It was a wise decision that I only watched 2 episodes .

      • Milton O’Bannon

You’re in for a real treat dude

  • SirRichard

I never thought we’d see the day where a VN like this managed to get onto consoles over here. Keeping an eye on this!

  • alhamega

OH god YES. I’ve been waiting for this.

  • Probably best gaming news for me this year, as Steins;gate is my favourite anime

  • Go2hell66

    better late than never

  • David Zech

Maybe I’ll finally get around to playing it. I have a hard time playing VN’s while glued to my crappy office chair.

  • DizzyGear

I was wondering what PQube was up to after they lost the Arc System Works titles and Senran Kagura but holy shit this sure came out of nowhere.
Awesome nontheless! I will pick up the Vita version day 1.

  • greeeed

…….even if I already have PC version, I plan to get ps3 version to let them know there is market for it in west so in future they bring other game like chaos:child , Muv-Luv Alternative – Total Eclipse …etc

  • Wooooah! It looks like a vast majority of my money is going towards video games in 2015!

  • Jeremy Noble

Neat! Love visual novel games on the ps3. Xblaze Code:Embryo being one of my favourites.

  • Shiki

Will it comes with extra contents or something? Or is it just a PC port?

  • crimsonidol

A really nice pre-christmas gift from PQube to announce a western console/handheld version.

  • katamari damacy

I’d pay for a physical PS3 release easily.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

aw yeah! i’d love to play this on the bus! hopefully it opens doors for the rest of the science adventures.

    • Jeremy Noble

Agreed. Would love to see Robotic: Notes Unite one day.

  • Guilherme Matheus Silva

    Christina! o/

  • Gosuke

What kind of gameplay is visual novel game??

    • mockturtle

      Reading, mostly.

    • BrokenSkullZero

Do you remember when playing Rpgs that have Character portraits left and right?

      90% that and making choices.

    • DyLaN

Its like reading a novel just with graphics, voice acting and music. With choices every now and then that may affect the plot development.

    • Gosuke

So, thats what its like. Not really into that kind of game though. Thanks for the explanation btw :)

  • Rid Vesalius

I hope they just translate the game, not Americanize/Westernize it~

    • I assume they’ve licensed JAST USA’s script, so it’ll be the same as the PC version. I can’t imagine -another- company wanting to spend money on another localisation!

  • mockturtle

Never heard of PQube before, but something tells me we’re gonna be best friends.

    • Sean ‘Geg’ Reddie

They handled Persona 4 Arena and Senran Kagura Burst in Europe

  • LanceHeart

This might be the first time I triple-dip on a VN. Can’t wait for this.

  • pimpalicious

Nice. I will definitely buy this for the Vita.

  • MinakoArisato

Evans, I totally agree with you.
I can’t wait to finally look at my Steins-Gate Retail-Game on my shelve.

    El… Psy… Congroo!

  • LightGenx

I’m pretty much digital only on my Vita except for a few games but this is one title I would definitely buy physical.

  • HarakiriKami

  • Mika Moreno

I’ve always wanted to play this, hooray! ^.^

  • Sion12

wow VN for console release!! hope they release a ipad port as well since vita is too small to play comfortablely in bed

  • MrTyrant

But its the same that I already read right? oh well I just hope that it sells for the other novels, the same thing I said always but hardly happen. Stein had a fandisc and I expect that one at some point in the future.

  • Jormangund

    • SupaPhly

      Robotics;notes hopefully!

  • PenguinPlayer

“I’m personally against digital-only releases, so I will do my very best to ensure a physical release happens. I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.”

This man, he understands me. Still I’m strapped for cash right now, already got Yakuza 5 on sights and I want to buy that as soon as it’s released to send a message to SEGA and my country’s economy is fucked up with the dollar prices staying just too damn high and too many import taxes that could triple the game’s price. Physical is painful for me, and I believe to a lot of people outside the US too. Still let us work together and maybe in a future I hope we can all get a physical copy of Steins;Gate in our collections.

Only then will the world know the true meaning of peace. El psy congroo.

  • Darkraiders

If they release a physical version on Vita i’m definitely buying it, if they only release digital i won’t buy though, i already bought the PC version and i don’t really want to buy another digital version.

  • Notquitesure?

    Fruit fetish

  • FTM

So weird this announcement. I literally bought the physical PC version about one hour ago.
This is cool; glad that this is getting a dedicated-platform release. I’m letting go of all my gaming stuff, but anything that involves VN’s being translated is good news in my book. Hopefully there are more releases, for both PC and dedicated platforms.
And boy oh boy are my fingers crossed for Robotics;Notes. I am grossly in love with that title, and would love to be able to play it in English.

  • koksuckaahh

More visual novels for the win!

  • LM009

wow this PQube knows what up and even physical versions. oh baby can’t wait

  • Wappuli

Nice, now let’s see if it’ll really sell enough to make more VN’s come to consoles in English.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

My PSV may die an underappreciated niche machine death, but damn it’s going to give me some really good times nonetheless~.

  • Zack

A physical release AND in English?! I’ll definitely show my support and buy it for the Vita. And if there’s no physical version, I’ll just get it for the PS3 instead! Everyone wins!

  • Yagami Mao

  • Michael Richardson

What? Yes! This will be a Day One Vita purchase for me.

Visual novels are best on handhelds, for me.

Now if this does well, maybe we can get Linear Bounded Phenogram.

  • NOW WE ARE TALKING! Such a nice Christmas-gift this localisation news!!

    • NeoStrayCat

      Don’t you mean Kurisu-Mas! X3

  • FlyByNight

    Meh Visual novels.

    • NeoStrayCat

      Meh, yourself. >_>

  • sakanaとkoeda

“I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.”
Seems this timeline is just about right then, huh?

  • MSJ

  • Still playing my PC copy, is there anything new with Vita?

  • He replied, “I’m personally against digital-only releases, so I will do my very best to ensure a physical release happens. I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.”

Amazing response, I’ve got my fingers crossed for physical, I would buy both it was physical.

    • Guest

      oops. wrong comment. please ignore.

  • notentirelythere

I’m not saying this at all as an expectation or anything close, but it’s hard to get hype over this without English voice acting, only because I got totally spoiled by the stellar FUNimation dub. OOF, I wish I knew these were gonna get at all translated. I woulda just held off watching and turn the voices off once I got the game.
Big hearts to JastUSA, whom are amazing. I wish I could give you infinity money forever.

  • Foryth

I already got the Limited Edition for PC, but I might still get the Vita version to read on the go.

  • Poyon

I actually wasn’t sure if this would ever happen, but Day 1! Definitely want to buy this and support both a great game and visual novels in the West.

  • Michael Kelehan

Awesome! Can’t wait. Here’s hoping we get dual audio and a decent English dub.

  • Brimfyre

    What the what??

Well I’ve only played through Kurisu’s route so I guess I can go through the other branches. One of those things you have to buy just to support the genre even if you have played it before.

  • Bought the PC version~ Will buy the Vita version too!

  • ShugoTakahashi

Really nice; the PS3 version is actually the best version of the game. It has 720p-resolution graphics (whereas the PC version only has 1024×576) and a really cool new intro animation.

I’m really curious about the translation, though. The PC translation is stellar and was done by a very dedicated bunch of fans who ensured its accuracy in the localization process (which is a tall order for S;G given its very heavy Japanese references). But the publishers of this themselves don’t even know if it’s the same translation? If it came straight from the devs then I’m sure it is, but I hope they didn’t change anything. It’s perfect the way it is.

    • Shippoyasha

Well, it’s an admirable and arguably perfect effort, but as a translator myself, there’s some lines I could have done a bit differently. I hope these guys have fun doing it their way and maybe it will be just as good or even better.

It was great to hear they improved the visuals upon them porting it to 360 as well.

      • ShugoTakahashi

Actually, 360 was the original console that S;G was released on. They downgraded the graphics for the for PC version.

  • lpchaim

YES! My Vita and I weep with joy!
Now if only the new Higurashi one was brought over too…

  • Linkmstr

  • MaidKillua

I like this guy. Like a lot. He’s opposed to digital only in a time when most people releasing games are desperate for it. Can’t wait to cut out the retailers and improve the profit margins. Which I get, but I like to actually own my games. I’ll definitely be getting this if he succeeds at that physical release

  • BlackXFrost

The last paragraph made me HYPED !

  • AnonymousNaruto2000

    Stein’s Gate…released…for Europe…..
(loved the anime, looking forward to this!)

  • piichan

“I’m personally against digital-only releases, so I will do my very best to ensure a physical release happens. I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.” – Bless this man.

I’ve been holding off watching the anime till I played the game, I’ll definitely pick up the Vita version.

    • Disappointed Friend

IMHO the anime did a good job with the series. It could’ve been confusing as hell but they handled it well. IIRC the game has a bunch of references that the audience may or may not to be familiar unless they are a SUPER fan of anime/manga/tech or etc but it never had a sudden infodump.

  • RagingTiger44

Never played it on PC. Vita it is.

  • Light Soul

With Sekai Project licensing big name VNs like Clannad and Grisaia and now Steins; Gate is getting a console release here in the West….. It is honestly amazing that just a few years ago all of this would have been impossible. It is a great time to be a fan of visual novels!

  • Shippoyasha

If physical content is a hard sell on stores, I hope they sell it straight from Amazon or other warehouse retailers. Really good that they have the fans in mind, especially for collectors.

  • carlospsp

  • James Reilly

Yes this is reassuring to hear. Sold at full price if physical happens otherwise will wait for sale if digital exclusive. Playing VN’s on a Vita is pretty satisfying.

  • subsamuel01

Getting this just because their putting effort into actually releasing a physical copy. I hate how much developer’s just opt for digital only. PSvita memory cards aren’t cheap and I’m still stuck with a 4GB.

  • NeoStrayCat

Yay S;G, and a chance for retail, awesome! X3 (Though this still reminds me of waiting for Eng. Phantom Breaker…>_>…though that’s something different.)

  • “I’m personally against digital-only releases, so I will do my very best to ensure a physical release happens. I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.”

    Hell yes!

  • Nu Blitz

He’ll yes time to buy again and make a step towards more console VNs

  • firstarioch

Someone understands that physical is really important. Refreshing.

  • Pandakids09 .

This just made my day so glad to hear Stein;Gate is coming out for the Vita! If this does well hope they release the other Stein;Gate stuff that’s already on the Vita in Japan

  • machomuu

I’m equally a digital and physical games guy, but man…this guy just saved a lot of people’s Vita memory card data.

  • Trinity

I never had the chance to play this as I have a Mac, so this is excellent news. I look forward to playing this.

  • FruitPunchSamuraiG

I’ll get both if it’s a physical release. otherwise i’ll just get the vita version. i already own the limited edition, but i like supporting this series.

  • Ren Yuumei

The Fu*k! A english VN for the vita???? WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

  • Alex

The stars have fallen and Nyarlathotep lurks in the shadows…

  • chroma816

Dayum. I’ll totally pick this up for the Vita when it comes. Plus, showing support for VNs will totally get more to be released and localized

  • Codex

So keen for this, about time I finished the series haha

  • 8ettieP46e .

Is this just a port of the game that is already out on PC or new content? Have the LE PC version by Jast… not sure I want to buy it again if it’s the exact same game with zero new content.

  • Darkwing7

Our prayers have been answered (even though i bought the LE on JastUSA xD)

  • Sergio Macellaro

Day one on PSV. I like sooo much the anime.
But let me ask, is the mainstream version what we will get (no porn i hope)? And it will be full voiced on jp??

Man, bring some Typemoon novels too!!

    • Kelohmello

There’s no porn in Steins;Gate to begin with. There never has been, because it was never an eroge. Stuff like that is also banned on console games, so you’ll never see a game do that.

      • Sergio Macellaro

        Good to know, thks.
I dont stand that kind of vulgar game.

        Day one, here we go!!

        • FruitPunchSamuraiG

It was originally a 360 game, so it’s always been “All Ages”

  • Revolver Jesus Super Pimp

“I’m personally against digital-only releases, so I will do my very best to ensure a physical release happens.”

I love you, you magnificent bastard this made my day.

  • Keko

“I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.”

Guys, I think I just met God.

    • revenent hell

      We all just did lol

    • Aristides

This person deserves their own harem and a statue next to every Buddha, perhaps his flag in every country? XP

  • CivilRobo

    1% Divergence achieved!

  • revenent hell

Woot and WOOT… I can even express how excited I am for this!
Thank the gods and goddesses or whatever may be for this!

  • Blesmi

You guys better hope they use the JAST translation because it was fantastic.

  • Kornelious

Hell Yes! One of the best Visual Novels coming to consoles in English! Now this is some VN news that i can really get behind! :D

“I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection” Nor would I good sir…..This is good to here, hopefully this means there may be a swanky LE as well like the PC version =D (Though I would buy both versions even if it was Digital!)

    • Zoozbuh

There was already a limited edition with the PC version a while ago though… And as awesome as they seem, PQube are a very small european/UK publisher, so an LE may not be possible. Not being negative, just saying we should be thankful for a physical release at all with visual novels :D

      • Kornelious

No I hear ya, Just getting the game physically will be good enough for me….But a boy can dream can’t she? XD

  • Zoozbuh

Yeeeeeees, I’m so happy. The impossible has just become possible, thanks to the gods at PQube. This will literally be a pre-order/day one purchase for me, whether it’s on PS3 or Vita. One of the best VNs ever made, and everyone needs to play it.
Not to be negative, but the only thing that worries me slightly is that “the build of the game PQube have received came directly from MAGES”. I’m starting to imagine a broken, Engrish translation (think back to that DS visual novel “Lux-Pain” which was released in English years ago), but I have my fingers crossed that this will not be the case :P The JAST translation from what I could tell, was pretty well-done.

    • calc84maniac

It’s very likely that the JAST translation is what they’re using. Their contract allegedly allows MAGES to reuse the translation in ports.

  • RagnoSaki

OMG YES! I will be getting this on Vita.

  • Kumiko Akimoto

Well I already have the pc verison but I’ve been too lazy to get back to it so I might get it for the vita.

  • Izzeltrioum

    What happened to that UchikoshixMages collaboration? Here I’m still hoping for a Remember 11 remake ;_;

    • Alexandra Cordes

Oh… Oh, what a dream come true that would be.
Maybe they would even finish the game and put an end to all the torment caused by that cliffhanger ending.

  • That’s awesome!

  • Alexandra Cordes

This is wonderful. This could lead to even more visual novels being localized if this does well enough.
I already bought the limited edition of the PC version, but if it has any extra content I’ll pick it up for the Vita.

  • Farid Belkacemi

So… Shoud I watch the anime or wait for this game first ? Decisions, decisions… :D

    • Alexandra Cordes

Wait for the game. The source material is almost always better than the adaption.

      • theBridgeburner

Except, the Steins;Gate anime is quite good – or at least I found it so.

        • Alexandra Cordes

Some adaptions are good. I won’t deny that. The source material is still better most of the time, though. That’s all.

          • theBridgeburner

And I cannot deny your point about source material. :)

  • Inuyakira

(O_O) Wow! Am i dreaming or something?!? Seriously I’m picking up my jaw on the floor right now! A ps3/vita visual novel getting release in English in NA!? I can’t believe it really happening!! But I am so supporting this!! It’s the first time I hear about PQube!! But for me they are now GOD!!!!

  • Abel_Nightroad

I already have the PC Limited Edition. But with this and Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters it’s time to show some support for translated AND physically released Visual Novels on consoles.

I also want to play all the Science Adventure Series and if it’s not on PC let it be on PS3.

  • Raltrios

This is great! I want to get it on my Vita, but before it comes out I want to know something. I’ve watched the anime, including the OVA and movie, and it doesn’t appear to be the case, but this isn’t originally a VN with H-scenes, right? This is the full game, no content removed?

    • EtherealEarth

You are right. It’s child-friendly XD
      And no content is removed.

  • James Hewitson

Awwww no Kousoku no Phenogram and Hiyoku Renri no Darling with it? That’s ok I’ve already have all three japanese vita versions anyway so I see no reason for me to buy the localised release. still for anyone that doesn’t understand Japanese and likes Steins;Gate please support this version as much as you can :-D

  • Aristides

Mother of God 0-0 this is not happening… BUT IT ISSSSS!!!! GLORY TO THE PRINCIPALITY OF ZEON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t believe this! day 1 on Vita, will buy both versions if they’re physical!

“I’m personally against digital-only releases, so I will do my very best to ensure a physical release happens. I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.”

Geraint Evans needs to be declared a Saint pronto. I would send this person flowers every day if I could afford to do so XD. He needs to have a statue done along with Vic Ireland somewhere in the states.

  • Jesus Christ

They should release it on Steam. Would buy it if it was on sale.

  • brian

This is amazing, I think this may be a day one thing for me.
I hop they’ll release the spin-offs at retail.

  • Mike lakiem

This is great news! Hope this means other VNs like the higurashi remake can make it here in the future.

  • SeventhEvening

I already own this in Korean, but I’ll definitely double dip for an English version. I’d even spring for a collector’s edition if they make one.

  • CleruTesh

Seriously, on top of Awakened Fate Ultimatum, Persona 5, and Yakuza 5, wow PS3 has some sweet life left in it.

  • Rinkawa Erion

“I’m personally against digital-only releases, so I will do my very best to ensure a physical release happens. I don’t want to imagine a world where there’s no physical copy of Steins;Gate in my collection.”

    My hero.
