Spider-Woman’s New Costume Is Being Debuted In A Game Before The Comics

By Ishaan . December 23, 2014 . 2:02pm

Spider-Man Unlimited on smartphones saw a major update last week, which added a bunch of new content to the game, including two versions of Spider-Woman, both from the regular and Ultimate universes. What’s interesting is, the new costume Spider-Woman is wearing won’t make its comic book debut until May 2015. Marvel decided to debut it in the game first.

“We started planning this last May or so,” says Nick Lowe, the editor of the Spider-Woman comic at Marvel. “[Series writer] Dennis [Hopeless] and I were hatching what the book would be and one of the first things I wanted to do was change her costume [both] because I don’t love that costume and she hasn’t really had an alternative to it! At least not for any long stretch of time.”

That said, Marvel didn’t want Spider-Woman wearing a new costume during the duration of the ongoing Spider-Verse storyline, which sees Spider-Men and Spider-Women from different universes banding together to fight off vampires that feed on their kind. The Spider-Man Unlimited game is based on the events in Spider-Verse, though, so Marvel decided to work with Gameloft to debut the costume within the game first.

In fact, Marvel seem rather invested in Spider-Man Unlimited in general. There are plans for the game to continue into 2015, where more fan-focused material will make its debut.

    Not much of a costume…

  • i like it!

  • deathman00789

    Love this style so much.

  • Mecha_the_Hedgehog

Ugh all these practical costumes there so boring.

  • subsamuel01

Is it really a costume though, I mean it just looks like a leather jacket with a design on it. If it wasn’t for the glasses she would look normal.

  • Rafael Budzinski

…nice costume. Clearly based on DC’s move on Batgirl, though.

  • Shippoyasha

Not really sure why practicality matters at all with comic heroes. Their very existence as costumed crime fighters is beyond crazy if you think about it. I don’t mind this costume, but I don’t really care for the ‘this is so much more practical!’ marketing push. It’s not that different from the dozens of colorizations on various Spidey renditions through the decades.

Sadly, Spiderwoman has a lot of catching up to do in order to be an interesting character. Story-wise, her involvement in Marvel-verse is kind of lacking. Because she is not that convincing a character right now (to be blunt, her story arcs are rather boring). Not really because her costume is practical or not. I think she’s coming close to her 6th different person donning the Spiderwoman name. They can’t seem to land on a lore/persona for her.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

It only matters with women super heroes.

    • Codename: D.A.V.I.D.

Jessica Drew was/is the first Spider-Woman.

And practical costumes become a factor when the parent company is worried with bringing their IPs in real-action media, like films, someday (And anyway I feel like this redesign is more in line with Jess being a spy/S.W.O.R.D. agent)

      • Shippoyasha

Yeah. Maybe they intend to make characters like Spider Woman into a movie character sooner or later. I still find it disappointing that concessions are made to accommodate ‘the mainstream’. It’s always the core fans that gets the shaft when that happens.

  • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

I looks like most of the marvel Games are doi this as it was stated by the designer of marvel heroes 2015 Ryan collans

  • lackofstyle

that costume is cool and lame at the same time. it cool because i like the practicality of it but at the same time its half assed as a costume, it looks more like one of those costume hoodies than an actually costume. also did the get a spider-woman? because last i checked(which was spider island) she wasn’t a teenager.

    • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

it’s similar to bat girl’s current look with the new 52

      • lackofstyle

ah you know i would be interested in this if i didn’t just hate all bat-related things in the new 52 buuuut its does look pretty cool so that good.

        • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

          yeah well …
there’s more video details here http://epn.tv/?s=Batgirl

on why the current team chose this look with bat girl. we’ll see what marvel creative says when their ready to speak . But there are two other games from marvel doing this as well with spider woman as I stated below Marvel heroes 2015 & marvels Avengers Alliance

  • Astrotrain

You got to be kidding. Was this costume made to please the feminist?

    • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

yeah it’s similar to bat girl’s current look with the new 52

      more video details here http://epn.tv/?s=Batgirl

ug like bat girl though spider woman hasn’t a new costume in 70 years

      • Astrotrain

        That doesn’t answer my question.

        • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

          your answer is in the Epn,tv link at the bottom it has the designers there & why they made it. for Dc with bat girl as spider woman this costume is too much of a simlar deal . this is what they think is cool design wise;

    • BigDrulez95

Yeah. The SJWs been bitching about Spider Woman ever since that comic cover not too long ago. It seems people hate sexual expression and the femme fatale concept nowadays. The new design is still looks hot, even though it’s not really a costume

    • Ninjagai

Yup. A minority of complainers somehow get to decide what’s acceptable. It’s the same people that got GTA 5 pulled from Australian stores, and shitty businesses just cave in.

  • About time superhero comics started moving away from that spandex look. I hope this is the start of a trend – I’d love to see some other heroes get the same sort of modernization treatment.

    • Slayven19

I don’t, the comics are famous because they don’t dress like your average joe and fight crime. I see people just like bland, which is what this is.

      • She’s not dressing as your avarage joe in this, though. It’s still very much a costume, but it doesn’t look dated and silly anymore. I’m not saying they should stop using an iconic look, but they should modernize it a bit.

        • Slayven19

It didn’t look dated before, the only costumes imo that looked more of less dated were a lot of ones DC comics used. The costume itself isn’t ugly, its just kinda bland.

  • urbanscholar

My 2 cents; a new costume is cool but it’s not doing much for hiding her face.

    • Codename: D.A.V.I.D.

Her identity is public anyway but due her job the costume could facilitate any effort to hide among civilians/at night.

  • Ixbran

Wow, for once a female super hero who doesn’t look like shes naked with body paint, and having her body contorted like a pretzel in order to combine ‘action’ with ‘sexy’.

why is this even being debated this design is awesome, it just needs a better mask or something.

    • Slayven19

Its not awesome its boring, what was wrong with the costume she had at first? It was spandex just like spiderman costume. A costume like this wouldn’t work on spiderman and it doesn’t work on her. It looks like something anyone would wear on the street and real life.

      • Codename: D.A.V.I.D.

Because Jessica Drew isn’t the type of superhero Spider-man, Captain Marvel or Daredevil are?

But more the Black Widow, Hawkeye, Mockingbird type of hero? (As in superspy/Agent of some secret organization)

        • Slayven19

Who all also still wears superhero gear so I still won’t give them the benefit of the doubt.

  • Attribule

Looks like one of those fake superheroes you’d see in an animated movie.

  • Ninjagai

So even though Spiderman’s costume is skin tight, it’s only a problem with female characters. God I hate feminists. Let’s end that shitty cult.

  • Pedro Tavares

Meh I dont like it that much, her old costume was great.

  • Ninjagai

Can you guess what opinions are being deleted?

    • M’iau M’iaut

Opinions having nothing to do with the subject at hand. Move it on.

      • Ninjagai

  • Ninjagai

Fuck SJWs for ruining this costume.

  • Saddio

Lamest costume on the planet. Looks dumb as hell as far as costumes go. No different than something you’d see in the city normally, bar the mask. Lazy

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    bland as hell

  • Disappointed Friend

Looks OK. I’m a fan of pants.

  • Hudson Bennett

What a boring design. Not memorable in the slightest.

  • Gojira Twit

Don’t like it. It casts kind of a bland silhouette, and her symbol now looks like one of those crappy artist renditions of Atari 2600 graphics.

  • It almost look like regular clothes. I mean…she’s a superhero so it is supposed to be flashy. It’s great that she isn’t half naked but she is missing the grandiose part of the uniform. o.O

Weird. She’s like an underdressed superhero.

  • Kumiko Akimoto

I like her normal outfit more so honestly, jacket is cool as hell.

    • freestylinyoshi

The other outfit was “too sexist.” Pretty soon all Cartoon/CG animated depictions of the female body will be Flat-Chested to conform to the views of feminist who find issues where there are none.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

        Why do feminist hate boobs?

        • M’iau M’iaut

@freestylinyoshi:disqus Let’s find somewhere else to take the assumptions folks. Thanks.

          • freestylinyoshi

Oh, I’m sorry did I use profanity. Or is “Freedom of speech” only acceptable when a large group agrees.

          • Time Sage

Freedom of speech only applies to the government. If a website doesn’t like what you’re saying they can tell you to be quiet, quit legally, it’s their website. As XKCD puts it… (I apologize up front for the language)

Original alt text: I can’t remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you’re saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it’s not literally illegal to express.

          • freestylinyoshi

I was making a point. People always get “flagged” for going against the tide.

Had I said, ” This is more suitable, because it doesn’t “sexualize” women.

That would have been the end of it.

Freedom from prosecution , only if followed by mass numbers.Or those who are simply too scared (of being outcast) to disagree.

        • freestylinyoshi

They don’t. But they complain about any and every depiction of women.

Everythings : Too big, Small,Sexy,Blonde. Booty too nice.
Everyone wants to push an nonexistence issue.

If you don’t remember, the only reason why Spider-Women is getting a change is because they complained about her previous outfit and the “Spider-pose” being too sexist.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I don’t know it always seems to me that they are trying to make those women wear outfits that hide boobs, because the only reason a woman’s boob can be defined in an outfit is to please men in some way.

  • alixraen

I kinda dig it, it’s subtle, not too flashy, toned back. It doesn’t look ridiculous, and I think I like it for that reason.

  • Christian Wright

cant wait for miles morales! sad that a mobile game is one of the few good spidey games out there

  • Adrian Duran

how about a bullet proof costume that can suck bullets in, and then shoot them back out at enemies

  • Suicunesol

The problem with this costume is that it isn’t iconic. It’s something that any female superhero could easily wear and, barring the spider design at the front, does not scream SPIDER at all. I know a lot of superhero costumes from the past century were kind of overly grandiose and flashy, but at least they’re memorable.

  • Hector Velar

how about they come out with an original female super hero instead of ripping off already existing male superheroes? the line was drawn already with female Thor…do we really need to keep going? do female characters don’t have what it takes to have success on their own that they have to be a copy cat of a male character? Marvel=advantageous sexists :P

    • Gentleman_Brobasaur

Its not like Spider-woman is new or anything…
And Marvel has plenty of strong females. They’re just all in the X-Men.

      • Hector Velar

and that is what I mean, they need to come out with new original cast, Spider woman is not, but the one I mentioned female Thor is pretty new. is like for marvel they female characters have to live from the shadows of their male counterparts(and honestly that is insulting to female comic book readers out there!). Like Dark horse comics had a good interesting female character Ghost, that had her own story and had a good success back then coming from a smaller house. Marvel are just too lazy and out of ideas(or frankly don’t care) to come out with fresh stuff specially when they try to please the female group (or the pervs that want to see their favorite super hero with boobs).

        • Frankie

Have you ever worked at Marvel? You do not know if any of what you said is true. Marvel changes their superhereos all the time. Spider-Man has been a man, woman, black and white. Creating a “female” super hero just to say we have a female super hero is dumb.

          • Hector Velar

but I guess creating one for commercialism purpose is not… right? right? I do hate when companies chage their ways because other companies are doing something different and being successful, like castlevania imitating GoW and Shadows of Colosus, it is making money for them so it will make money for us too!… I think they should not change their way and stay original rather that try to change to please a group of people or because it is what is making money for others. With possibly the exception of She-hulk none of this characters will ever be as popular as their male counterparts. so yeah why not try something new. that is my point.

          • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

as I mentioned this is real problem is this as I stated i this forum https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/comment/1459395#Comment_1459395

each of the female cast of marvel is original the issue is accessibility

        • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

the have an original cast here’s the problem. I’ve stated in the marvel heroes forum cause that stated all the strong female characters there from wasp & the invisible woman there thor with both sif & valcarlye

Marketing is an issue as well it’s not out there enough too as well not the way that movies ad video games are via TV and more and near by shops to pick them up from.

    • Shippoyasha

Marvel has strong female characters left and right. The problem is that female superheroes often don’t really have enough user/buyer interest to justify them giving them very ambitious storylines, unless they are a part of a bigger event or team.

    • G-SANtos

      Except Spider-Woman isn’t a ripoff of Spider-Man?

I’m not going to pretend I know a lot, since I’m not an expert in Marvel Comics, but unlike Supergirl, Batgirl, etc, she wasn’t made as a “female Spider-Man” other than the name. Heck, her first origin story as completely separate from Spider-Man! In her first origin story Spider-Woman was a spider that was hyper evolved into a human by the High Evolutionary.

The thing is, decades ago there was a big issue about the ownership of trademarked names. Marvel once created a character named Wonder Man, and DC sued them because of the name’s similarity to Wonder Woman. Then DC created Power Girl after Marvel had created Power Man. In the 70’s, another company was going to make a new superhero named Spider-Woman, and Marvel decided to publish a character named Spider-Woman first so they could own the trademark. They even used an origin story that was intended for Wolverine. Source.

Also, Spider-Woman was originally intended to be an one-shot character, as her only purpose was to protect trademark, but Marvel Spotlight #32 sold so well they decided to give her a series. So, even when she got her own series, she was completely unrelated to Spider-Man. Marv Wolfman even deliberately avoided any Spider-Man guest appearance or crossover. So, she’s not a “Spider-Man ripoff”. At best, she’s a Web-Woman ripoff, as she was created to prevent Web-Woman from being named Spider-Woman, but calling her a Spider-Man ripoff, is basically not doing your research.

    • Steven Higgins

You could say the same about DC, they’re just as bad, maybe worse, not only are many of their female “heroes” and “villains” just copies of their male ones with breasts, but they’re often relegated to being sidekicks to the male heroes they’re based off of and not heroes in their own right. You could scream “But Wonder Woman!” but that’s just one exception, Marvel has plenty more females not tied to male counterparts, even if they don’t get as much exposure

  • Hunts Rattata

It’s a cool outfit, but it looks like street clothes, not a costume.

  • TeachDRRR

I thought I missed something when the title said costume and yet the picture looked like street clothes. Then I figured it out.
It’s nice that it’s practical and she looks fine, but… she doesn’t look like a super hero. There’s nothing about the costume that yells super hero. The spider could be just any old logo with this design, and the glasses don’t hide her identity at all. I could see someone going for a jog in this, not fighting crime.
So while it’s not BAD, it’s definitely missing something to make it stand out and give it that super hero feel. And I don’t mean spandex, just something to flair it up.

  • Silver Mushroom 2

The Costume looks great and the sense of style is amazing. Problem is that this is a superhero costume. Unless this is a origin story, then this costume goes back into just being awesome.

  • worldreader

Man they tried to copy the new batgirl design and just failed at doing it.

Batman/girl’s outfits where always about the silhouette and not necessarily the suits’ pattern and that’s where the batgirl design flourishes because it keeps that original silohette intact for the most part.

On the other side, Spider-wo/man’s design(s) where always about what was on the suit so when you try to emulate what the batgirl design did it just falls flat. If the added more flair to it’d work but as it is it’s such a boring outfit.

  • Codename: D.A.V.I.D.

I really like the new costume! And now I want to try the game ^_^

I hope Anya Corazon with her Araña costume is playable someday.

  • Condorito Jones

Its a great outfit if you’re going out to meet some friends but it’s a horrible superhero outfit. I’m sure the chronically offended are delighted with it though.

  • zero254

    Wonderwoman all over again

  • Freud_Hater

It’s a great look but… isn’t it terrible for her secret identity? Or does she not have one like Peter Parker does? ôo

    • Steven Higgins

Not really, she’s wearing a mask. Or is it a pair of yellow sun glasses? Either way, when it comes to comics as long as your eyes are covered the villains are too stupid to figure out who you are, never mind that all they have to do is scratch you or pluck a hair to get enough D.N.A. to run an analysis to and find a match.

      • Seccom Masada

        Like in Green Lantern movie:
“What do you mean? I’ve known you my whole life! I’ve seen you naked! You don’t think I would recognize you because I can’t see your cheekbones? What is this? Why is your skin green? Why are you glowing? What the hell is with that mask?”

      • andacar

It’s the old Superman bit. They made fun of it in Mystery Men about Captain Amazing.

  • NoDuh!

This looks to me as though, they are planning on using this for movies or TV. Skye from “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” maybe?

  • Clay Christopher Harris

jessica drew’s new outfit is cute. and fresh. kind of like the uniform for a very hip travel agent. that being said, i like the old spider woman costume that shows off her butt. so there…..
