Shovel Knight’s Next Playable Character Will Be The Plague Knight

By Ishaan . January 10, 2015 . 2:00pm

Yacht Club Games are currently working on additional content for Shovel Knight, and say that the first of this content will be a campaign for the Plague Knight.

In the new mode, the Plague Knight will be a playable character, complete with his own abilities and story. Mona (above), the lady that runs the potion mini-game in the village, will have a “vastly expanded” role in his campaign as well.

As detailed in past reports, there’s a lot more content planned for Shovel Knight in the months ahead. This includes story campaigns for King Knight and Spectre Knight, a gender-swap mode, a 4-player couch battle mode exclusive to Wii U, and more.

In addition to the extra content, Shovel Knight is also being prepped for release on PlayStation platforms, with Kratos as a boss character. We’ll have more on the game as further details are announced.

I’m really looking forward to play this game so I hope the wait for the PS version won’t be too long. And I wonder if any of these additional content will be also added in the PS version later.

  • Derek E Nay

Cool, plauge is my second favorite knight; first being Specter Knight. I wonder what they will add for the PS games though. I remember in a podcast interview with one of the developers saying the only reason it wasn’t in other consoles and handhelds was because they wanted to have something different in each version and the Wii and 3DS made sense to them.

    • PS version has Kratos I don’t think anything beyond that is happening. Just some sony money being thrown at them. It’s good for them though the game should get played by as many people as possible.

Well I’d say that’s $10.99 well spent. Keep it coming Yacht Club! This is a great game.

  • I can’t wait, I love shovel knight so much, I’ve already beat it twice and I’m working on a 3rd playthrough. I almost never replay my games but it’s just such a great game.

  • Shippoyasha

I kind of hope they just go straight to making the sequel with some of the old and new characters. There’s a lot they can do if they can make Plague Knight work.

  • Crevox

“Mona (above), the lady that runs the potion mini-game in the village, will have a “vastly expanded” role in his campaign as well.”

Above where? They say above in the original post because there’s actually an image of her above. :p

  • 하세요

I hope it’s soon. Really love this game and would definitely support via DLC.

    • HarakiriKami

      DLC is free

      • 愛憎

        I’d pay.

      • 하세요

I kind of wanted to pay to support it further, but that’s cool too.

  • Point_Blank

Yay!…ok, now where’s the date of release for PS3, PS4 and PSV version?

    • HarakiriKami

      next year

      • Point_Blank

        Neh! Let’s say… this year. ^ ^

  • I swear I keep telling myself I”m gonna play this game but never get around to it.

    • LastFootnote

It’s a great game, assuming you like platform action. Try it out!

    • supercyc10

      should, iz pretty fun.
      wait a little more
maybe they’ll have some sort of dlc bundle

      • Seizui

The DLC for Plague Knight and onward are free, actually.

  • TrueDefault

I thought Shield Knight was going to be playable?

    • 하세요

Perhaps saving the most anticipated for last or making sure her campaign will be the most epic, I dunno.

    • Haunter!

No, there were three stretch goals for boss knights and one for a gender swap mode.

      • TrueDefault

I must have misread it then!

  • I really dig watching speed runs of shovel knight, and I’m really interested in seeing how plague knight changes things up :)

  • Eman_Resu

I got the game for 12.25 during the recent sale and I wish I would have got it sooner. The platforming in this game is amazing, the writing is hilarious and the music is perfect. The updates coming are free too.

    • daizyujin

So these are free updates? That is good. It helps to take some of the sting out of that $15 price tag. The game may be worth it for all I know but I just can’t remember the last time I paid that much for a downloadable game.

      • Eman_Resu

Ha you sound just like me before I bought it especially 15$ digital for an indie game. Once I made sure the updates were free I pulled the trigger. It is a little short especially if you don’t care about collecting upgrades or finding secrects but the core game is very satisfying, the updates should make it more then worth the price if you feel like waiting though.

        • daizyujin

That is good to know. I will get it for sure when it comes out on PS platforms. I figure I might as well wait since it is going to have extra content. I have waited this long. Plus the original Vita’s OLED screen is a god send to 2D platformers.

  • Ren Yuumei

“Kratos as a boss character” Eh….

  • Scissors

“A 4-player couch battle mode exclusive to Wii U” I think all versions of the game will get the Battle Mode, except for the 3DS version which has the streetpass Battle Arena mode instead.

    • Slizarus

I hope so, I don’t want to get it on the Wii U just for that :-/ I’d rather have it on my ps4 and vita.

  • MrJechgo

    1) I honestly FAIL to see why this game is getting hated on… What’s the problem with that game again? Controls? Graphics? Gameplay? Story? Characters? Music? Bonuses? Yeah… can’t find the reason here. It’s Mega Man mashed with Super Mario 3 mashed with The Legend of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link mashed with whatever NES knight game that was existant back in the day. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a Kickstarter project that actually WORKED and delivered tenfold.

    2) I really hope that they make a sequel… although, while I don’t have a problem with the graphics, I do wish that they go with SNES graphics next time. Seriously, 8-bit/NES-looking indie games are getting too many these days. Just step it up already! Yatch Club Games should team up with Wayforward to deliver the same game quality, but with better sprite art. Imagine Shovel Knight with the same level of detail as Shantae, Mighty Switch Force and DuckTales Remastered O_O

    • LastFootnote

??? I don’t think Shovel Knight gets much hate. There’ll always be someone who doesn’t like it, but overall it’s been extremely well received.

      • MrJechgo

I’ve heard people calling it “overrated” and such, like people are getting sick of seeing Shovel Knight in Top 10 Best Games of 2014 and other kinds of lists.

Shovel Knight doesn’t have that many flaws, so I can’t find the hate. If it’s about the publicity and attention it has been getting since its launch, then I still fail to see why to hate.

        • Haunter!

Someone saying something is “overrated” isn’t hating on it necessarily. It could just be that everyone around them claims it’s perfect while they see flaws.

          • daizyujin

I tend to agree. I rarely ever get super excited for anything and I always see the flaws. It isn’t that I can’t appreciate something but when a game gets a 10/10 on a site I usually can find 3 things that would stop it from getting said rating. As for Shovel Knight, I can’t say it is overrated as I have not played it but given the ridiculous amount of love it is getting I suspect it is at least a little bit. I refused to pay full price and by the time it was put on sale, the PS version was announced with extra content so I think I will just wait for it on Vita.

          • StarkEx

Some games are well-loved and people like to praise them and geek out over them. That doesn’t make a game overrated, or mean that people think a game is perfect; all it necessarily means is that people were generally thrilled with the game. And they’re totally entitled to express that.

As well, any well-loved game gets 10/10 ratings from some critics. But a game doesn’t deserve to be called overrated just because some critics do that, because there are always some critics that do that.

At this point, what does that even matter? “Overrated” and “Underrated” are just pointless fussing over the opinions of others. No game is going to feel the same to everyone, and that’s perfectly fine.

          • daizyujin

Well said. At any rate. Waiting on the PS Vita version of Shovel Knight.

        • StarkEx

Every well-liked game gets called overrated by some people. Don’t let it bother you.

        • They /do/ realize that all the “greatest games of 2014” got delayed to 2015, right?

      • Ren Yuumei

This is why i dont give a shit what people think, I just play games.

    • Haganeren

Well, there IS pixel art and there is “NES imitating pixel art”…. And for me, it’s not the same.

As for the hate.. Didn’t see it.

  • Shade DMessiah

I missed out on this so i’ll get it for Vita because it actually looks cool .-.

  • daizyujin

Have they said anything about cross buy on Playstation platforms?
