On May 28th, Nintendo released Splatoon in Japan, and the game sold 144,818 in its first week. At the time, Nintendo reported that the game was virtually sold out everywhere, and apologized for the stock shortages. Now, we have a better idea of how Splatoon did.
Japanese sales tracker Media Create reveals that Splatoon sold through 97.33% of its shipment, and that most stores ran out of stock on the very day of its launch. Despite the shooter genre having a limited userbase in Japan, Nintendo’s commercials for the game and their Global Testfire demos helped spread awareness of the title.
Meanwhile, the three Splatoon Amiibo figurines that were released alongside the game also performed very well. Media Create says that the Splatoon figurines sold through 90% of their shipment (with total sales of 106,000 Amiibo across all types, counting the triple-set as three Amiibo sales).
Since Splatoon saw such a strong sell-through at launch, it should be interesting to see how sales hold up over the next few weeks, and if the game manages to catch the interest of more and more people as word of mouth spreads.
