Mirror’s Edge Catalyst Producer On Meeting Fan Expectations

Recommended Videos

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst senior producer Sara Jansson has posted a few thoughts on the game over at EA’s Live To Play website, ahead of its reveal at the company’s E3 press conference later today. Here’s what she has to say:

On meeting the expectations of Mirror’s Edge fans:

“Coming out of the original game, we learned a lot from our fans about what makes this title truly unique. They loved the skill-based, first-person movement, the stylized look of the world, and of course, Faith. We wanted to honor that, but at the same time offer a new experience because this game is not meant to be a sequel.

“The team spent a lot of time re-evaluating those aspects of the game to create a new Mirror’s Edge experience for this generation. This meant pushing the boundaries of first-person movement, and diving deeper into Faith’s origin story, while also offering new gameplay for our players. We’re excited to see what our fans think when they see Mirror’s Edge Catalyst.”

On Faith and what she stands for:

“For starters, you have to be really clear on who she is and what she stands for. Faith is a hero at the center of her own story, fighting for freedom against oppression. And second, you have to look at her design. Everything about her look means something, and her clothing is designed with function in mind. Her tattoos tell a story about her past. Nothing is there by chance – or even there as eye candy.”

On the game’s box art and recording Foley for Faith:

“We had Faith’s outfit tailored by a Swedish clothing designer and photo scanned to reach the right quality. Also, Faith’s pose on the new box art is actually our team member, Liza, posing on a table in the office. And if that’s detailed enough, recording Foley for Faith actually involved recording a naked man that looks like Jesus (yes long hair and beard) wearing a pair of very torn sneakers. You wouldn’t guess when you hear it in the game.”

On the challenges of developing the game:

“Having announced the game two years ago, expectations are extremely high. We have our core fans who are very interested to learn how we are rebooting the game, and of course we also want to bring new players into the franchise. Finding that balance of honoring the first game while providing something new is both challenging and exciting, and we believe we’re on the right path.”

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is in development for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
