Zelda-Inspired Blossom Tales Hits Your Nostalgia Bone With Pretty Pixels

The four members of indie game studio Castle Pixel admit that they’re stuck in the ‘90s, yearning for the games they played as kids. That’s why they’ve decided to create one of their own, Blossom Tales, which takes The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past as its biggest inspiration.

Currently, Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is up on Kickstarter, where Castle Pixel is hoping to raise $45,000 in order to bring the game to Windows PCs. The team says it would love to bring it to Mac, Linux, Wii U, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, iOS, and OUYA as well, but can’t guarantee at this point that it will happen.

It’s an action RPG with big, colorful pixels and swift combat that’ll engage with through sword, shield, bow and arrow, and spells as you head through the dungeons—a mix of hand-crafted and randomized sections—looking to save the kingdom.

Interestingly, Blossom Tales is framed as being told by a grandmother to her granddaughter. The grandmother narrates the story and it’s possible that events will shift around and change as the granddaughter asks questions.

The gist of the story is that, on the day a heroic warrior called Lily becomes one of the esteemed Knights of the Rose, the evil wizard Crocus places the King into an everlasting sleep. You play as Lily as she ventures out into the big wide world to find a remedy, and probably sort Crocus out along the way, too.

If any of this sounds appealing to you, and there’s plenty of reason why it should, you can back Blossom Tales on Kickstarter to support its development. For $10 you can bag yourself a digital copy on PC, and there’s beta access, wallpapers, instruction manuals, exclusive weapons, and art books to be had at higher tiers. You can also vote for Blossom Tales to come to Steam via Greenlight.
