The last time Sony revealed the PlayStation 3’s lifetime sales figures it was sitting at 80 million strong, but it shouldn’t be long until the current gen PlayStation 4 surpasses it, as it now hit 76.5 million, according to the company’s latest quarterly earnings report.
A whopping 9 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold between October and December 2017. Last we heard, the PS4 was at 73.6 million units sold as of December 31, 2017. While it shouldn’t be long until it surpasses the PS3, it will still take some work to take the throne from Sony’s best-selling console, the PlayStation 2, which as of March 2012 had sold approximately 155 million units worldwide.
The earnings report comes shortly after the news of current President and CEO Kazuo Hirai stepping down to take a chairman role. He will be replaced by Kenichiro Yoshida, the current Director, Representative Corporate Executive Officer, Executive Deputy President and Chief Financial Officer.
