SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays Producers Playstyle Differences Compared To Genesis

SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays’ producers sat down for an interview with Famitsu recently, where they talked about how the latest game in the series has changed compared to the last game, G Generation Genesis.

Here are the highlights:

On the topic of how the titles in Cross Rays interact different ly from that in Genesis:

Yoshiki Miyagi, director: “In Genesis, you would always end up with newer machines vs older machines, but in this game you get to see the varying units from four different worlds interact in interesting ways. For example, what happens when you have the Nanolaminate Armor from Iron-Blooded Orphans against the Phase Shift Armor in the SEED series? Furthermore, with the planet defensors from Wing and GN Fields from 00 also included, it’s not as simple as ‘newer mecha are stronger’. Compared to Genesis, you get to enjoy a different type of tactical gameplay.”

On whether there have been any struggles in development so far:

Keiichiro Joutaki, art director: “This game, we made new models for new units, and paid great attention to detail during development. From the insides of the hands to the bottom of the feet, and the nozzles on the back, we put a lot of effort into development while asking ourselves, “Can this be seen properly?” Each unit stores its beam sabers in different places. Wing Gundam does so in its shield, while Wing Zero is a rare case where it’s stored in the shoulder. It would be one way to have units start off holding their saber, but we were adamant on showing the units taking them out, and struggled especially with the modeling.”

SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays releases in Japan and Asia in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Check out the producers’ thoughts on the series’ first PC version here.
