Namco Bandai is dabbling in the free to play market with one of their biggest brands – Gundam. Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation is an online mecha game where you fight other players in a Gundam or sneak into enemy bases to set explosives sans giant robot.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation was released in Japan on June 28 and by July 2 the PlayStation 3 game was downloaded 300,000 times. Downloading the game won’t cost you a dime (or yen!), but Battle Operation limits how much you can play it because each mission you accept costs sortie energy.
Sortie energy restocks over time or you can buy some with real world money. To celebrate, Namco Bandai is running a campaign where 50,000 players can get free sortie energy. The promotion appears to be limited to players in Japan, but anyone can play Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation. All you need is a PlayStation Network account registered in Japan.
