The new story trailer confirmed the appearance of new characters to the story of FFVII Rebirth. A short scene showed Cissnei in the Gongaga Region where Zack used to live. Cissnei is a former member of the Turks that made her debut in Crisis Core FFVII, and was not present in the original Final Fantasy VII. She is seen wearing combat attire and fending off from intruders alongside other locals. Furthermore, a silhouette reminiscent of Gilgamesh appeared at the top of a pagoda.

The world of FFVII Rebirth will be comprised of many different areas. Some of the regions showcased include the Grasslands region outside of Midgar, the Junon Region, the Corel Region where the Gold Saucer is located, the Gongaga Region, the Cosmo Canyon Region, and the Nibel Region. The Meridian Ocean set in between the two main continents will also be explorable to a certain degree. The new footage also shows an unveiled Northwood area.

All playable characters will be available to control outside of combat, and each one will have unique ways of interacting with the world and move across it. These unique movement options will be vital to complete puzzles and progress through the world of FFVII Rebirth. Barret can shoot objects with his gatling gun, Yuffie can swing across gaps, Tifa has a grappling gun, Red XIII can climb some walls with his agility, Cait Sith can grab and toss heavy items, and Aerith can manipulate lifestream energy.

Some new elements to the gameplay include character Folios. Folios work similar to the weapon upgrades in FFVII Remake, and is the way players unlock new Abilities and Synergy commands. Each character will also have its own level, but there will be a shared party level. Square Enix also confirmed that story progress will not lock players out of any side-content, meaning that people can play at their own pace without missing anything.
