Superficially, Final Fantasy IV: The After borrows plenty from Final Fantasy IV. Reused enemy sprites give off an aura of nostalgia, right? Besides the new storyline about Cecil’s son, Square Enix altered the battle system. New to Final Fantasy IV: The After is the band system, which enables MP consuming attacks when you have specific members in your party. The picture on the right shows Holy Blade*, a band attack that draws on powers from Cecil and Rosa. The other alteration links magical and physical attacks to phases of the moon. I believe this mechanism was added so players can’t depend only on selecting “fight” during combat. When the moon is out of phase players will have to try using skills and other strategies to press through the game.
