We hadn’t heard many updates on Project Mara since the Ninja Theory horror game first came up in January 2020. At the time, it was described as a “mental terror” game and “experimental.” A brief video that was under a minute highlighted some of the concepts behind it.

Ninja Theory Studio Head Dom Matthews confirmed the game isn’t happening. Matthews gave the following statement to Xbox Wire:

“And with the fact that we have the entire team working on this game, I suspect some people might ask what’s happened to Project Mara [a previously announced horror title] – I took the decision to not work on that any further. These decisions are never easy, but I did so to take the opportunity to have all of the talent and expertise in the studio, all 85 creatives, working together to realize the potential of what Senua can be.”

In case you’d never heard of this Ninja Theory horror game before, here’s that teaser trailer.

The next Ninja Theory game will be called Senua. It’s the latest entry in the adventure of the heroine introduced in Helloblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and who continued her journey in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. The first game in that series appeared on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the sequel showed up on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
