Retro doesn’t always pertain just to graphics, with Tiny Dice Dungeon taking us back to the roots of role-playing games with simple dice rolls to determine the result. The 8-bit graphic iOS game has players questing through the world, defeating and capturing monsters with nothing but a mountain of six-sided dice.
These dice do everything—from dealing damage to capturing monsters—and different versions which you can craft can do all sorts of things such as adding elemental or poison damage to your rolls. Yes, there’s a crafting component which lets you craft your own loaded dice. The cool bit is the risky nature of rolling: You can keep on rolling and re-rolling dice, adding more and more damage or healing as you want.
Doing so even rewards risk-takers with more cash or health back. Roll a one, however, and your turn’s over with a critical fumble. Fortunately, this also applies to enemies including boss monsters.
Where it goes beyond though is the addition of all sorts of other extras. You’ll be able to rebuild the ruined town as you progress through the game in a semi-Harvest Moon style, which slowly unlocks more options. Some of these options include the ability to capture and train the monsters you fight, who’ll then add more dice to the pool, the aforementioned crafting of dice, and even item creation to better fortify yourself during fights. Oh, and yes, you can also partake in player-versus-player dice-fu combat as well.
Tiny Dice Dungeon is out now on iOS.
