Edmund McMillen Disheartened By Dataminers Exposing The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth Secrets Already

Edmund McMillen says that he’s disheartened by the recent efforts of dataminers who have already exposed secrets hidden away inside The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth that were supposed to take months to uncover.

McMillen said this on a Vinesauce livestream interview that he was invited on to talk about Rebirth alongside Tyrone Rodriguez, who is the head of Nicalis, which is the studio that worked on Rebirth with McMillen.

“It’s disheartening. It sucks because we’re gonna start working on an expansion soon, but we sure as hell aren’t gonna fucking take all the time that it took,” McMillen said in the interview as transcribed in a Reddit post.

“[E]specially with Simon, who tried his best to really bury the stuff so it would deter people from doing this, but all they see is a challenge, so they’re going to dive right in and do it anyway. I can say right now that I don’t think the expansion is going to feature any buried secrets that anybody will care about.”

Rodriguez followed this up, stating that it was “months of our life, between me and Ed and Simon. Ed had this really crazy idea, we were like “let’s do it, it’ll take months, some people won’t find this for years!” Nope, one week.”

For any forthcoming Rebirth expansions, McMillen says that he’ll only lock away secrets behind really challenging areas, and not “something that [he thought] was going to be a really fun and community-based ARG, which would have been nice if it was allowed to take place.”

If you really want to know what the dataminers uncovered you can find it if you look hard enough, but for the sake of those that don’t want the spoilers we will not discuss it here.
