1996 was a pretty good year for games. It’s the year of Crash Bandicoot, Metal Slug, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Tomb Raider, Kirby Super Star, and Super Mario 64. So, why don’t we pretend we’re still living in that fantastic year?
That’s what the team behind upcoming gory first-person shooter Strafe propose. If you go to the game’s website (press “Yes” at the bottom to enter, although pressing “No” is also worth the effort too) you’ll see that it has been made to look like it was made in the mid-1990s.
The slow scrolling text, the gifs, and thick borders of that website hit my nostalgia bone pretty hard. But so does the game it has all been put together for.
The video you can watch above is the “STRAFE® Über-Gore © Tech Sneak Peek,” which is purposely made to sound like the naive marketing of hardcore violence and ultra gory graphics (it was only pixellated blood) that games like Quake and especially Soldier of Fortune came with.
Strafe is a procedurally generated shooter and it seems it’s still pretty early in development. But I’m sure there are those of you out there that still appreciate lo-fi gore at the end of your shotgun blasts.
