Cross-Network Play Coming To The Xbox One

An announcement from Chris Charla, Microsoft ID@Xbox Director, has revealed a much requested feature for the Xbox One. Part of the company’s GDC 2016 news includes the unveiling of cross-network play.

Charla says cross-network play came about due to developer requests for the feature. Microsoft will allow developers to let people playing a Xbox One or Windows 10 game enjoy multiplayer experiences with people on other, different networks. This means someone playing a game on the Xbox One could be playing with someone who has the same game on their PC.

Rocket League will be the first game to make use of cross-network play. People on the Xbox One and PCs will be able to play the game together. Microsoft also says there’s an “open invitation for other networks to participate as well.” Rocket League is also available on the PlayStation 4.

Charla also made a few other ID@Xbox announcements. MonoGame, open source programming framework, will be supported on the Xbox One. Axiom Verge will be one of the first games on the console that uses it. The Xbox Game Preview is also going to continue, and more ID@Xbox games will be coming to Windows 10.  #IDARB was mentioned as one of the first ID@Xbox Xbox One and Windows 10 games to support cross-play.

The 2016 GDC is running from March 14-18, 2016.
