Nintendo hasn’t talked too much about what will happen with the Nintendo Wii U once the Nintendo Switch is released. However, Eurogamer says multiple sources have told them that Nintendo Wii U production will end on November 4, 2016.
Eurogamer notes that its sources say the Japanese Nintendo Wii U production line will end on Friday. The final order deadline was October 31, 2016, with only a small number placed. This comes after Nintendo said it decided to ship 0.8 million units of the console in the fiscal year ending March 2017. Of those 800,000 systems, 560,000 had been produced and shipped as of September 30, 2016. If this is the end of the Nintendo Wii U production, then this final run could consist of the last 240,000 units.
The Nintendo Wii U launched in North America, Europe, and Australia in November 2012, Japan in December 2012, and Brazil in November 2013. Over 13.36 million Nintendo Wii Us had been sold worldwide, according to Nintendo Q2 2016 financial report. Nintendo has not yet issued an official statement regarding the status of the system.
