The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Surprisingly Performs Better In Portable Mode

Recommended Videos

Many of you are getting the Nintendo Switch today, assuming you didn’t already get one like a trooper in the cold midnight launch last night, and those of you who are getting Zelda: Breath of the Wild might be wondering which mode is better for you to play it. Here’s the latest from Digital Foundry to give you a better idea.

The video gives us a comparison at how the game looks in both portable and docked modes with all the small details from scaling to filtering quality. You can head to the 7:20 mark of the video to check out more on performance with a comparison on frame rates. Surprisingly, the game actually runs better in portable mode than docked mode, contrary to what many expected. And yes, the day one patch is installed.

As the folks from Digital Foundry pointed out, what was more noticeable about the docked mode’s moments of lower framerates, at times down to 20fps, was the fact that you could go into battle at 30fps only to leave and come back with less action to have it dip down to the 20s, so there appears to be an inconsistency going on with performance while docked.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now available for Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
