More details on Splatoon 2 appeared in the latest Nintendo Direct. First, it has a launch date. Both the game and three new amiibo will appear on July 21, 2017.

Salmon Run is a new mode debuting in Splatoon 2. This is a cooperative mode where a team of four Inklings employed by Grizzco Industries head to a man-made island to fight off waves of salmon to collect Power Eggs. Two sorts of enemies were shown in the trailer, basic Chum opponents and Steelheads that act as bosses. Occasionally, golden eggs will be dropped, which need to be transported to a location on the map to collect them. In addition, all Inklings in this mode wear life vests, so their allies can spray ink on a life vest to revive them. Special rewards are offered for completing a run in the Salmon Run mode.

Details on the Splatoon 2 amiibo functionality were also revealed. An Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, and Squid amiibo will debut at launch. Scanning them in allows you to “befriend” the character. You can then equip your favorite weapons and gear, saving them to them should you go to play on the road. Scanning in these characters also lets you take pictures with them and receive special gear as gifts.

Splatoon 2 will come to the Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2017.
