Minecraft Better Together Update Adds Cross-play

One of the more unexpected images during Microsoft’s E3 2017 media briefing was the sight of a Nintendo Switch during a Minecraft trailer. Mojang appeared during the presentation to reveal a Better Together Update would be coming to the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10, mobile, and VR versions of Minecraft in Summer 2017.

The Better Together Update will bring cross-platform play to all of the aforementioned systems. While the PlayStation-system and Minecraft: Java Editions will still remain current and updated, the versions of Minecraft for the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10, Apple iOS devices, and Android devices will all be known as just “Minecraft.” Save data from the previous versions of the game will carry over to this new one. This will be a free update for all of the included platforms and will also add cross-play compatibility for all DLC anyone already owns. The example provided by Mojang says people who buy the Greek Mythology pack on one platform will then own it for each cross-play version of the game.

In addition, the Minecraft Better Together Update will add a server browser to each version of Minecraft’s start menu, allowing you to choose which server you would like to play on online. Parental controls and other features will be available when these launch. The first four servers will be CubeCraft, InPVP, Lifeboat, and Mineplex.

Minecraft is available for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, Windows 10, Apple iOS devices, and Android devices.
