Ace Combat 7 Producers Talk About The Game’s Theme, ‘Reinventing the Sky’

Ace Combat 7 came out today in Japan, and in a launch day event, the devs talked about the main theme of this latest title, ‘Reinventing the sky’. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

Here are the highlights:

Please tell us how ‘Aerial Innovation’ came to be the main theme of the game.

Manabu Shimomoto, producer: “The reason why ‘reinventing the sky’ is the core theme of this game, is because “clouds with volume” and “air currents” created using current technology to make a field with depth to it was the starting point for this project. We were certain that if we made this the center of our latest game, it would be a proper evolution for the Ace Combat series.”

Kazutoki Kono, series director: “When we thought about what we sort of innovation we could add in the latest numbered title, we realized that we could probably reinvent the “sky” that is the core of the gameplay. It’s not as as flashy or beautiful as changing the gameplay systems, but when you play it, you’ll be able to tell how much it’s improved.”

So this “reinvented sky” will affect gameplay, then?

Shimomoto: “That’s right. Air currents and clouds will affect gameplay no matter where you are. Clouds become something like obstacles and structures, while natural occurrences and air currents will be quite fearsome in the missions.”

Jun Tamaoki, VR producer: “By bringing together clouds and air currents, you could say that the feeling you get while playing is like playing in a jungle gym in the sky.”

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown releases for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 18, 2019. It releases for PC on February 1, 2019.
