Cadence Of Hyrule Dev Talks About How Nintendo Agreed To Make An Indie Zelda Title

Yesterday, Nintendo and Brace Yourself Games announced Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necrodancer, a completely new title based on Crypt of the Necrodancer but that features Link and Zelda as playable characters as well. In a new interview, Brace Yourself Games founder Ryan Clark and Nintendo relations staff Kirk Scott talked about how this surprising collaboration came to be. [Thanks, IGN!]

According to Clark, they were considering adding Zelda characters as DLC for Crypt of the Necrodancer, but surprisingly, “Nintendo was extremely interested in the prospect”. Scott followed up by explaining Nintendo’s position:

“Developers are always reaching out to Nintendo to include IP in their games… When you look at a case like Cadence of Hyrule, there’s special cases in some instances where our Japan team see content and see titles that they want to work with and [the interest is] a two-way street, really.”

Why Zelda though? One reason raised is the mutual connection between both games – music. The Zelda series is known for its memorable and classic music, and instruments are often a core mechanic. “Being able to mix these two together into an awesome musical mashup of gameplay is definitely one of the most exciting points!” said Clark.

Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer, which happens to be Brace Yourself Games’ second-ever title, will come to the Nintendo Switch in Spring 2019.
