Project Diva Mega 39’s Was Decided For Switch Because The Series Was Originally Portable

The latest issue of Famitsu has an interview with the developers at Sega behind Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega 39’s, which was announced earlier this week. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089!]

According to the developers:

  • People were asking them to make one since a while back since the Switch was doing well, but it took them a while to decide on what sort of game to make.

  • Because Future Tone did so well and was so well-received, the developers wanted to give back to the fans with a new game. Originally, the series was made to be portable, so it fit the Switch.

  • The included songs chosen are representative of Hatsune Miku’s era, and songs that are fun when played with Joy-Cons. They wanted to add all songs, but the ROM size and development period made it hard to do so.

  • The them song of the game is a secret. They asked to make a song themed around the past 10 years, and the 10 years to come.

  • Easy Mode, which is played with Joy-Cons, has been balanced so that even kindergarteners can complete the songs. Hard Mode is tough enough to satisfy those really into rhythm games.

Some other development details include that NRP (non-photorealistic rendering) has been used for all songs instead of just a few, meaning that Miku and her friends are more anime style compared to Future Tone. The extra mode hinted at on the website will use the Joy-Cons in some fashion, but no details were revealed in Famitsu. The new mode will be playable in a demo available during Magical Mirai 2019. Finally, there is a new feature that will let players enjoy character customization even more.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega 39’s releases for Nintendo Switch in early 2020. You can check out the reveal trailer here.
