Fantasy Earth Genesis launched in Japan in September 2018 as a smartphone successor to Fantasy Earth: Zero. Square Enix basically wanted to make a mobile version of the free-to-play action MMORPG Fantasy Earth: Zero, which first launched as Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion in Japan in February 2006.

While the game received plenty of support, Square Enix decided it would be difficult to continue providing a satisfactory experience. The game ends service on March 31, 2020. The micro-transaction currency “Orbs” are no longer available for purchase.

The gameplay itself was kind of a lag-fest of up to 100 players in 50-vs.-50 action. It has MOBA elements with the main objective of destroying the enemy base, expanding on their domain, summoning, defending, and more. It also has Summoned Beasts that you can bust out like Odin.

The original Fantasy Earth launched as a paid-subscription title of 1,300 yen a month as part of Square’s PlayOnline service. It only lasted a few months due to low subscriptions and was taken over by GamePot who relaunched it as Fantasy Earth: Zero to emphasize the zero cost to play. Square Enix currently runs the game with regular support and updates. We even saw it get a Trails series collaboration a couple of years ago.
