News on smartphone games with service ending can feel like a dime a dozen sometimes, but this particular title of note comes from developer Colopl. This is the company behind White Cat Project who had staff involved with Final Fantasy VII. Back in 2018, Project Babel was announced as Colopl’s latest RPG, featuring a story written by Final Fantasy VII writer Kazushige Nojima. Less than a year since its launch, the game will be shutting down come April 30, 2020. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
The story involves the giant tower of Babel, a place filled with people who have lost the concept of civilization, and is silently heading towards demise. People have forgotten what it’s like outside of the walls surrounding the tower, except for Rye, a young boy who was raised in an isolated room dreaming of freedom. However, as the cogs of destiny begins to turn, he gets his chance to leave his room and meets a lonely young girl who was raised in a cage.
Despite the short life of the game, it was able to finish its entire story, with the final chapter being Chapter 4 Part 2. The game will end service on April 30, 2020 at 3pm JST, and as thanks to the players who have stuck around for the entire story, they are giving out free in-game gems and items, as well as additional log-in bonuses up until the end of the game.
