An array of Animal Crossing: New Horizons merchandise has been released to accompany the upcoming game, but one piece is causing quite a stir online. A seemingly ordinary bit of licensed merchandise skyrocketed in price after being listed on Amazon on March 16, 2020. As of 1:30am CT on March 17, 2020, an Animal Crossing water bottle is going for $2,162.95. Update: As of 7:30am PT on March 17, 2020, it is now $13,228.49. Update 2: After passing $16,000, the issue was finally caught and changed to “currently unavailable” as of 11am CT on March 17, 2020. [Thanks, Cheap Ass Gamer!]
The saga began not long after the Controller Gear Animal Crossing water bottle was listed. About one hour after Cheap Ass Gamer posted the price, it noted it went from $19.99, the official retail value, to $26,97. In the hours since, the price has only been increasing.
As for the product itself, it is a standard stainless steel water bottle designed to hold 17oz of a liquid. The double wall is designed to preserve the temperature of the liquid within. It also includes a filter basket to allow someone to place bits of fruit in there, like oranges or lemons, to flavor the drink. The outside is green and has Isabelle, Tom Nook, Rover, Kapp’n, Resetti, Lottie, Timmy & Tommy, Reese, Cyrus, and Celeste on it.
Controller Gear will have multiple other Animal Crossing: New Horizons accessories, like $9.99 tech decals and console skins. Other companies’ items include Bandai Spirits’ kuji and Power A controllers.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons will come to the Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020. The Animal Crossing water bottle, which cost $2,379.25 as of 1:42pm CT on March 17, 2020, will be available on April 15, 2020. It is strongly suggested people wait to place any orders until the price returns to $19.99.
