Japan Retro Game Association Will Donate Super Famicoms to 100 Households

The Japan Retro Game Association (JARGA) has announced plans to donate free Super Famicom consoles to 100 households in Japan. This comes in light of Japan’s recent state of emergency declaration, which has closed schools and entertainment centers, like arcades, nationwide, resulting in children being at home all day.

JARGA’s free Super Famicoms will include everything a family will need to operate the retro console, including an adapter, cables, and a controller. The organization is also including two games with each system: Donkey Kong Country and Final Fantasy 6. The JARGA members have made sure that all consoles and games are cleaned up and fully operational.

Families who are eligible can apply on JARGA’s website. In fact, all eligible families will need to do is pay for shipping fees, which range from ¥1,100 (~$10.20) for Shikoku to ¥1,750 (~$16.26) to Hokkaido. JARGA is asking that families with a Super Famicom in their home refrain from applying. The association also really wants homes with children under the age of 16 to apply, so they can enjoy a blast from the past with their parents.

Over the past few weeks, multiple companies have come together to provide entertainment during Japan’s state of emergency orders. Animax is running an all-you-can-watch campaign until May 6, 2020. Khara Inc. has released the Rebuild of Evangelion movies on YouTube for free. Bandai Namco is giving away free copies of Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 worldwide.
