The main gameplay segment involves launching balls by tapping with good timing to destroy waves of enemies. A player can set a deck comprised of characters from various Disney titles, such as The Little Mermaid, Toy Story, Winnie The Pooh, and Big Hero 6. The game can be played in single-player or multiplayer with up to 4 players, and it also has an original storyline that can be read with episodic manga releases.

Star Smash has its main characters designed by Oh! great, who is most known for Air Gear and also worked on character costumes in the Tekken series. They are also voiced by a stellar cast of Japanese voice actors. The protagonist of the title is Yuu, who is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka. He forms a group called Red Braves with Shin (voiced by Ayumu Murase), Kohya (Katsuyuki Konishi), and Kei (Nao Touyama).

XFLAG has also prepared a Star Smash commercial movie featuring the theme song “Stardom” by Mrs. Green Apple that will start airing on Japanese television on November 17, 2020. This video, which shows a sneak peek of the gameplay as well as the Disney characters which are drawn in anime style, is also immediately available to watch on the game’s official YouTube channel:
