A release date for the upcoming Resident Evil movie was confirmed on actor Chad Rook’s Twitter. Resident Evil will come out on September 3, 2021 in the United States. It will serve as an origin story and pull from the first and second Resident Evil games.

Development for the movie started in early 2017. However, the project had a bumpy start due to various producer and writer changes. COVID-19 complications delayed casting and filming as well.
The cast for the Resident Evil movie is:

- Chris Redfield: Robbie Amell (Fred Jones in Scooby Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster)
- Jill Valentine: Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr/Ghost in Ant-Man and the Wasp)
- Leon S. Kennedy: Avan Jogia (Beck Oliver in Victorious and iCarly)
- Albert Wesker: Tom Hopper (Luther Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy)
- Ada Wong: Lily Gao (Nancy Gao in The Expanse)
- William Birkin: Neal McDonough (Deadshot in Batman: Assault on Arkham)
- Chief Brian Irons: Donal Logue (Harvey Bullock in Gotham)
- Richard Aiken: Chad Rook (Zachariah in Supernatural)
- Lisa Trevor: Marina Mazepa (Fabianna in Savage/Love)
Resident Evil will focus on events that took place in 1998 and will explore the secrets within Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City. Prior films were over-the-top and action-oriented, which matched the aesthetics of games following Resident Evil 4. In contrast, the Resident Evil movie will return to the tense and grounded horror of the first two games.
Additionally, this is not the only upcoming Resident Evil project. The eighth main entry in the franchise, Resident Evil Village, is set to release on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on May 7, 2021.
The Resident Evil movie will be in theaters from September 3, 2021.
