Originally released as Earth Defense Force 2025 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, D3 Publisher later remastered the game for the PlayStation 4 and PC in 2016. The remastered version, titled Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair, included a new expansion in addition to the original base game.

The game was announced at the very end of the promotional trailer for the upcoming Earth Defense Force 3 Nintendo Switch port. However, the reveal offered very little in terms of details with only a tentative 2022 release date. There is also no word on whether the game will be a remaster or a simple port of the game, or if it will be available outside of Japan. D3 Publisher states that more information about the game will release at a later date.
