Nintendo Switch Sales Exceeded 5 Million Units in Japan in 2021

According to a report by Famitsu, Nintendo Switch sales exceeded 5 million units within Japan in 2021. Famitsu estimates that a total of 5,579,127 units were sold in Japan through 2021. This numbers includes sales for the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Lite, and the OLED version of the console. Additionally, in July 2021 sales for the Nintendo Switch within Japan exceeded 20 million units. Famitsu also notes that this is the second year in a row that the Nintendo Switch has sold over 5 million units. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

In November 2021, a financial report from Nintendo revealed that the console had sold roughly 92.87 million units worldwide. Nintendo stated that the on-going success of the console was largely due to the successful release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. As it stands, Animal Crossing: New Horizons remains the second best selling title for the Nintendo Switch. It is just behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The report by Famitsu also notes the success of Monster Hunter Rise and both Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Specifically, Monster Hunter Rise is estimated to have sold 2,350,693 units within in Japan in 2021. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are estimated to have sold 2,313,115 units within Japan. These numbers have been aggregated from the original releases of the titles. Additionally, this only accounts for physical versions sold.
