Alone in the Dark Reboot Announced

Classic horror series Alone in the Dark is coming back, again. THQ Nordic announced that it’s working on a new game to bring the franchise back to its roots. The game doesn’t have a release window as of yet, but it’s targeted for the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

In a pitch posted to the PlayStation Blog, THQ Nordic said that the game will simply be called Alone In The Dark. This makes it the third game to bear that title. The first was the 1992 original, which pioneered many of the elements that Resident Evil would help popularize on consoles. It spawned two sequels and the Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare reboot in 2001. The original trilogy received a sequel in 2008 on PS2, PS3, and Wii. It was also called Alone in the Dark, but was renamed Alone in the Dark: Inferno for the PS3 release. The last game to bear the brand was 2015’s Alone in the Dark: Illumination, an online multiplayer spin-off of Inferno.

According to THQ Nordic, the game will be developed by Pieces Interactive. Involved staff include Mikael Hedberg, the writer of horror games SOMA and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and monster designer Guy Davis, a collaborator with director Guillermo del Toro. As a reboot, it will feature an original story set in the 1920s, and have elements from the original game. The Derceto Mansion, characters like Emily Heartwood and Edward Carnby, and more will be drawn from the original.

The gameplay for Alone in the Dark will be similar to survival horror by more modern standards, with third-person combat and other contemporary gameplay conventions.

Alone in the Dark is in development for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
