Is It Worth Attending Classes in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

Given that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet cast players as students at Naranja Academy and Uva Academy, with optional “classes” to attend. Given that someone is never actually forced to attend, you might wonder if you should even bother going. Well, even though there are no penalties for truancy, you can get free items and unlock the ability to see storylines with different teachers by going to school, taking midterms, and finishing courses.

How Do Classes Work in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

When your school life begins in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the only classes you can take are Battle Studies with Dendra, Biology with Jacq, and Math with Tyme. Once you unlock the open world elements, you can take History with Raifort and Home Economics with Saguaro. After that, you need to go through some of the Victory Road storyline and get two badges to add Art with Hassel and Languages with Salvatore to the docket. From there, additional lessons unlock as you return to the academy, take courses, and progress the different storylines.

In a class, the teacher will typically ask a question. You do need to get these correct when taking a midterm or final exam to pass and get rewards. However, in standard classes you don’t experience any negative effects for a wrong answer. In fact, in your first art class with Hassel, none of the answers are a “wrong” one. If you pass the midterm for the class, which involves refreshers of information already “learned,” you’ll get five Exp. Candy S to help level up your Pokemon. Passing the final gets you five Exp. Candy M.

What Happens if You Complete Classes in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?

After taking a someone’s class in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, it often means you kicked off a brief side story involving them. When you go to explore the school, you may see an exclamation point next to a location where that person is located. If you scroll to it, you will then see ellipses suggesting that professor wants to talk to you. If you do, you can start forming a bond with that teacher. This can result in getting rewards like items, TMs, or even Pokemon. So for example, Hassel will give you 50 Dragon Tera Shards after completing his storyline or you’ll receive a Galarian Meowth for taking the time to get to know Salvatore.

However, some teacher segments aren’t tied to classes. For example, you can’t finish Clavell’s storyline until you complete Starfall Street, and Jacq won’t dole out every reward until you register 400 Pokemon in your Pokedex. Meanwhile, Nurse Miriam’s storyline advances as long as you continue on your journey and doesn’t involve any classes.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available for the Nintendo Switch.
