Super Sentai King-Ohger

2023’s Super Sentai Show is Royalty-Themed King-Ohger

The next installment of Toei’s long-running Super Sentai tokusatsu franchise has been unveiled. Japanese network TV Asahi officially revealed that the 47th show in the franchise is titled Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger, which translates roughly to “Monarch Squad King-Ohger.” The first episode airs on March 5, 2023 in Japan. It’ll follow the conclusion of this year’s Sentai show, Avataro Sentai Donbrothers.

Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger is the first Super Sentai show to be “King-themed” and incorporates motifs from medieval fantasy settings. Even the title is a multilayered pun, with “Ohsama” being a form of reference to royalty, and the pronunciation of “Ohger” in Japanese being similar to “ouja”, a way of saying “monarch”. Each member of the King-Ohger squad is the ruler of a fantastic nation. Circumstances bring the team of leaders together to protect the world.

TV Asahi also released poster art for the show.

In another first for the franchise, all the principal characters of Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger have designs based on bugs. The red Kuwaga Ohger is based on the stag beetle. The blue Tonbo Ohger uses dragonflies for his look. Yellow queen Kamakiri Ohger is based on the praying mantis. Purple Papillon Ohger is butterfly-themed. Black-colored Hachi Ohger is inspired by the bee. The team’s gear and weapons also take from fantasy designs, with swords, shields, capes, and knightly armor. Their transformation item that serves as proof of their royal position. The mecha of King-Ohger are called the “Shugods”, and share bug inspirations with their operators.

Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger will air in Japan on March 5, 2023. The Power Rangers franchise, which often adapts Super Sentai shows, will debut Power Rangers Cosmic Fury on Netflix in 2023. It’ll take elements from 2017’s Uchu Sentai Kyuranger and 2019’s knight-themed Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger. Original Green Ranger Jason David Frank died in late November 2022.
