How to Get a Horse Mount in Tears of the Kingdom

Hyrule is huge and though that’s definitely not a bad thing, it does mean that walking just won’t cut it. I mean, who has the time to go everywhere on foot? Here’s how to get a horse mount in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to help with that.

How do I get a horse in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

Horses are found in the wild and often run around together in packs of two or more. They come in all sorts of different colors and patterns like white, brown, black, and weirdly enough blue. You’ll often see them galloping around near stables, especially if an open field is nearby.

To get a horse mount in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, crouch and approach the horse slowly from the side. Don’t come at it from directly behind or it’ll buck you with its hind legs when you get close! I found that out the hard way. Once you’re close enough, quickly press the A button to jump on the horse’s back.

The horse will immediately start trying to throw you off, so tap the L button repeatedly to tame it. Depending on the rarity of the horse and its stats, you’ll need a certain amount of Stamina to be successful. If you can’t tame the horse that you want, either drink a Stamina potion and try again or move on to another.

Can I permanently keep my wild horse mount in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

Yes! Once you’ve tamed a horse, ride it to a stable and talk to the person at the counter to register and name it. This will officially make it yours to ride whenever you want. Even better, if you’re in close proximity to your horse, you can call it to you by pressing down on the D-Pad.

While your Paraglider will often be your main mode of transportation, a horse is useful for covering large areas quickly, especially on flat land where it’s difficult to get enough height to use your Glider.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available now exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
