A look at Sega’s Iron Man

In a behind the scenes presentation I got to see Iron Man on the Xbox 360. In the short demo Iron Man flew around tundra shooting chest beams. Secret Level cleverly linked Iron Man’s suit power to his life bar. If you keep shooting chest rays, you use up the suit’s power and begin draining his life bar. Iron Man has other powers too like repulsor beams that shoot from his hand and a sweet looking counterattack where he grabs a missile from the sky, turns it around and throws it back to the ground. Like in the comics Iron Man can fly over large distances. When he is flying the camera locks Iron Man is in the bottom left hand side of the screen a la Resident Evil 4. When it’s time for action and Iron Man is calmly hovering, the camera switches and puts Iron Man in the center of the screen. It is hard to get a feel for Iron Man from only watching a few minutes of gameplay, but it looks like a flight simulator meets action game where Iron Man rips apart tanks.

Sega is working closely with the team behind the Iron Man movie to capture the feeling of the film. However, they are going to add in a few surprises for comic book fans. Secret Level hinted at alternate suits, but they didn’t mention which ones would be included.  The other interesting piece of information I don’t think many people touched on is there are two different developers for Sega’s multiplatform Iron Man game. Secret Level is handling the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions while A2M is taking care of Iron Man on the PS2, Wii, and PSP. It’s a little unclear Iron Man for the other systems are going to be downgraded ports or completely different games.

Since the presentation was behind closed doors I couldn’t bring back any pictures and Sega has not released any images. So I’m left with some stock art, but Iron Man is up to par with other Xbox 360 games.
