A Witch’s Tale Introduces Drag & Drop RPG Combat

I sampled A Witch’s Tale at E3 and I noticed the build was in English. A good sign that A Witch’s Tale is on track for an October release in North America.

Pardon the lack of story details. For the sake of time I fast forwarded through the text and searched for monsters. While A Witch’s Tale felt like it’s designed to appeal to girls first, Hit Maker didn’t dial the difficulty down. A black hole randomly appeared underneath Lidell and sucked her into a battle every few steps.

A Witch’s Tale has a turn based combat system with drag and drop controls. Instead of picking fight from a menu I dragged the fist icon to the letter A, which represents a monster on the top screen. For the most part magic works the same way too. Lidell has a bunch of spells ranging from your typical fire blasts to plant magic on a wheel in the bottom right hand corner.

However, if you cast a super charged spell you need to trace a symbol to cast it. Sounds easy right? I still can’t believe this was challenge in A Witch’s Tale. The task is timed and if you go outside the lines you have to start over. I’m not sure if this was tough because the US version isn’t finished or if it’s hard for no reason. A representative from NIS America admitted she had a hard time drawing some of the runes too.

A Witch’s Tale isn’t done yet so NIS America could change this. Actually, I hope they do. Other than rune drawing A Witch’s Tale is pretty friendly for first time dungeon crawlers and it could act as a gateway to the genre.
