In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can encounter a mysterious robot named Bernard in the Underdark Arcane Tower. Here are all correct BG3 Bernard Answers, and where you can find The Roads to Darkness book to unlock them.
Where to find BG3 Bernard answers, explained
In Act 1, players can encounter the Construct named Bernard on the top floor of the Arcane Tower in BG3. When speaking to him, the NPC will ask, “Is it the foe, that foul contemptious heel?” There are five ways to answer Bernard, each with a different outcome and reward.
Below is a list of all BG3 Bernard answers and what you get from them:
- Answer: “Or art thou, friend, a rescue from my lonely wake?”
- Location: The Roads of Darkness Book (Arcane Tower on the third floor).
- Reward: Bernard will accept the player as his new master.
- Answer: “How can I trust? How will I ever know? / How can I show myself, my darkest me?”
- Location: Threadbare Book (Arcane Tower first floor. A bookshelf in the Greenhouse).
- Reward: Guiding Light Ring (Wearer can cast Light Cantrip).
- Answer: “These empty sheets are all that’s left of you. / The last of all the thoughtless gifts you gave.”
- Location: Patched Parchment (Arcane Tower on the top floor. Desk next to Bernard).
- Reward: Potion of Greater Healing.
- Answer: “There is a light in every living thing. / It’s crawling t’wards the surface to survive.”
- Location: Evil’s Ascent Book (Arcane Tower second floor. Read “Dusty Book” in the Entrance.)
- Reward: Bernard will become hostile and attack the player.
- Answer: “The silence stretches on – I’m all alone. / Please, can I hold your hands, for just a while?”
- Location: Torn-Out Paper (Arcane Tower in the third floor bedroom)
- Reward: Bernard thinks the player is Lenore and hugs them.

BG3 Evil’s Ascent location
The first answer you are likely to find for Bernard is Evil Ascent. That is because in BG3, the “Dusty Book” can be found on the Arcane Tower’s second floor at the coordinates X: -29 / Y: -272, the building’s main ground-floor entrance. As soon as you go through the front door, take a right and look for the giant table with a book sitting on top of it. Interacting with it reveals it to be a “Dusty Book,” which unlocks one of Bernard’s dialogue choices.
BG3 The Roads to Darkness location
The best answer to Bernard’s dialogue is unlocked after you find The Roads to Darkness book. The novel is a tragic play, and the main response the Construct Robot is looking for. In BG3, The Roads to Darkness location can be found on the Third Floor of the Arcane Tower at the coordinates X: -28 / Y: -295 on your map. As soon as you exit the elevator look for a giant stone table in the back corner of the room with scrolls on it.
BG3 Threadbare location
The Threadbare can be found on a bookshelf on the first floor of the Arcane Tower Greenhouse at the coordinates X: -50 / Y: -288. As soon as you descend to the floor, exit the elevator and head straight across the room. You will see a giant wooden shelf where the Threadbare can be read by interacting with it.
BG3 Torn-Out Paper location
In BG3, The Torn-Out Paper note can be found in the Arcane Tower third floor Bedroom at coordinates X: -35 / Y: -289. It’s actually on the same floor as the Roads to Darkness book. As soon as you arrive at the location, exit the elevator and loop around it to the right. Eventually, you will find a small desk to the side of the elevator with a piece of paper on it.
BG3 Patched Parchment location
Finally, the Patched Parchment can be found on the Arcane Tower’s Top Floor at coordinates X: -30 / Y: -287. Specifically, this note can be found behind Bernard. Just walk past the robot and look for a giant stone table in the corner of the room next to the staircase. Interact with the small note to unlock the Patched Parchment answer.
How to get Light of Creation in BG3 from Bernard
If you are wondering how to get the Light of Creation Halberd from Bernard in BG3, there is, unfortunately, no answer that gives you the item as a reward. Instead, you have to fight for it. Yep, the only way to get the Light of Creation in BG3 is to kill Bernard. If you were hoping there was a secret sixth Bernard answer, there isn’t.
There are only five BG3 Bernard answers, and those only lead to the reward items we listed above. So, if you want to get the most out of this Arcane Tower NPC, exhaust all of his dialogue options and then take him out. However, there is a secret cutscene in a later Act featuring Bernard. Without spoiling, it’s nothing too major. So unless you like the Construct a lot, you might as well take it out.
