Square Enix announced one of its next board games will be a Dragon Quest Monster Shogi: Let’s Catch Monsters title for beginners. It will launch in Japan on December 18, 2026. When it does, it will cost 2,420 yen (~$15.40). It’s unknown when or if we’ll see it worldwide. Places like Hobby Link Japan and Hobby Search already opened pre-orders and are shipping them worldwide. It is one of multiple board games from the company based on its video games.
As this is a very rudimentary and beginner take on Shogi, Dragon Quest Monster Shogi: Let’s Catch Monsters only comes with a handful of pieces and small board. The board is a 3×4 grid. There are two pieces with Slimes on them, two with Killing Machines on them, and two with Great Sabrecats. Each player gets one of those. There is also a Zoma piece for one player and a Dragonlord True Form for the other. Each game is expected to only take about five minutes, due to its simplicity.

It’s very possible we’ll eventually see this Square Enix board game worldwide. It’s done so before. For example, the FFVII one Ascend the Shinra Tower showed up first in Japan before heading to the Square Enix Store worldwide. There’s also a reprint of
FFVII Remake Materia Hunter on the way in 2027.
Dragon Quest Monster Shogi: Let’s Catch Monsters will show up in Japan on December 18, 2026 and we could see the beginner’s board game worldwide after that.
