Best Abilities to Unlock and Upgrade in South of Midnight

South of Midnight focuses quite a bit on its almost arena-style combat system. With so many spells and skills to use as Hazel, there is also a dedicated abilities tree as well. As such, the best abilities do exist that I think every player should unlock and upgrade as soon as they can in South of Midnight.

How to Unlock and Upgrade Abilities

First of all, how you unlock and upgrade abilities in the first place is by gathering Floofs. This is the upgrade currency required to do this. You can get these by defeating enemies and collecting them from glowing interactable objects in the world. In addition, though, you also have to actually physically unlock the ability in the first place.

You do this by progressing through the main story and leveling up Hazel. Most of the upgrades and abilities are locked behind leveling up Hazel. In fact, I would even go so far as to argue that this is more important than gathering the Floofs in the first place.

Best Abilities to Unlock and Upgrade in South of Midnight

When it comes to the best abilities to unlock and upgrade, it will come down to personal preference to some extent in South of Midnight. For instance, if you use a particular spell more than others, it might be worth upgrading it. That said, here are the general abilities I recommend unlocking as soon as you can:

• Weaver’s Blitz: Unraveling an enemy will now send a Strand Blast at the same time
• Cleaning Rend: If you hold down the Y button, you will send off Strands and do an area-of-effect attack
• Bob and Weave: You are now able to dodge two times in a row

Then, when it comes to which spells and abilities to upgrade first, these are my recommendations:

• Refreshing Push: This makes Strand Push now reset the timer for its cooldown after hitting more than one enemy with it
• Vanquishing Rend: Strand Pull resets once the player uses Tethered Strand to take out an enemy
• Crouton Tangle: This final upgrade for Crouton will now make the controlled enemy cast Weave on a target
