In Umamusume: Pretty Derby, you need to raise at least five different horse girls to participate in races like PvP mode. While all horse girls can become powerhouses with the right combination of skills and luck, some stand above the crowd due to high base stats, growth, and useful personal skills. Here are all the best characters to pull for in Umamusume: Pretty Derby at launch, separated by specialty.

Best Umamusume for Dirt Races: Oguri Cap

Oguri Cap is one of the rare horse girls with a high enough affinity for dirt tracks that you can raise it to A via inheritance. She’s got high base stats, good growth rates, and a powerful personal skill to pass down. Even if you stop using her as your ace for dirt races, she remains a strong runner for most courses.

If you don’t have Oguri Cap, build Haru Urara.

Best Umamusume For Short Races: Taiki Shuttle

Though Sakura Bakushin O is the queen of short distance races and is extremely easy to build, Taiki Shuttle wins thanks to her versatility and good personal skill. Depending on inheritance and RNG, you can place Taiki Shuttle in your mile or dirt teams. Even if you retire her, she’s a good horse to inherit skills and stats from too.

If you don’t have Taiki Shuttle, build Sakura Bakushin O.

Best Umamusume for Mile Races: Silence Suzuka

While Oguri Cap is useful for her flexible affinity, Silence Suzuka’s the best character because she can guarantee results no matter which game mode she’s used in Umamusume: Pretty Derby. Her personal skill speeds her up if she’s at the front of the pack during the second portion of the race. It’s a guaranteed activation, so long as she has the stats she needs.

If you don’t have Silence Suzuka, build Daiwa Scarlet.

Best Umamusume for Medium Races: Symboli Rudolf

Agnes Tachyon and Tokai Teio are both fantastic horse girls to raise, but I think Symboli Rudolf is more worthwhile. She has a strong personal skill that’s guaranteed to activate (unlike Tokai Teio’s) and is fantastic to pass down to fellow slow-paced runners. Symboli Rudolf also gains a lot of debuff skills that allow her to remain a useful contender on your PvP team even after you get better girls.

If you don’t have Symboli Rudolf, build the aforementioned Agnes Tachyon or Tokai Teio.

Best Umamusume for Long Races: Super Creek

Super Creek is one of the best characters at launch for long distance races in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, but she can be really frustrating to build thanks to her story mode gimmicks. However, she shines in PvP content even when she’s not your ace thanks to her variety of healing skills and low-cost debuff skills to help rack up your points. Like with Symboli Rudolf, the debuffs allow her to stay useful to your team even after you outgrow her and get some stronger long distance horses.

Everyone should be able to get Super Creek. But if you don’t want to use her or you’re having a hell of a time doing so, build Mejiro McQueen or Gold Ship.
