Final Fantasy XVI does what you might expect from a mainline game in this series by including a plethora of optional content to complete. Much of this is in the form of optional side quests, which you can ignore completely for the main story. But if you do that, can you miss any sidequests in Final Fantasy XVI?
There Are Missable Side Quests in Final Fantasy XVI
Some light spoilers for the Final Fantasy XVI main story ahead.
The unfortunate reality is, yes, there are missable side quests in Final Fantasy XVI. In fact, there are quite a few of them throughout the game. As you may know from even before the game came out, the crux of this story is following Clive Rosfield during three core stages of his life.
This means a fair number of time skips throughout the main story, which, unfortunately, directly affects the side quests. There are some of these that are only available when he’s 28 years old, for instance, and you can miss out on these if you skip to the next stage of his life.
How to Avoid Missing Side Quests
Thankfully, there are some ways to avoid missing out on side quests. Whenever you’re on the world map, you can note the side quests’ locations by their notable yellowish-green icon. I suggest for the completionists out there to head straight to them before heading to the next main story mission location.
This way, you check off any side quest boxes as you go. In addition, always open up the map in the Hideaway so you don’t miss out on starting any quests, too.
But the big turning point in the main story—more specific spoilers ahead—comes when you have “The Crystal’s Curse” main story mission. There are a fair number of side quests that you can miss out if you do that mission before completing them. The game will warn you before starting that quest as well.
I recommend keeping several different saves to be safe. If you do happen to miss out on any side quests, though, that is where the New Game+ option comes in. You can replay the game and complete any content you missed out on.
Final Fantasy XVI is available on the PlayStation 5.
