Classic Dungeon, Nippon Ichi’s upcoming pixilated action RPG, is more than a retro rehash. The game has a creative take on how supporting characters level up.

In dungeons you only control one selectable character, but you’re not alone! Before you head out you set up a battle formation for partner characters and they grow depending on where you place them on a grid. They act sort of like upgradable equipment – “equipment” that you can play as. Dengeki PlayStation has pictures of the heroes which include a black cat and an afro-sporting guy called Bob. Similar to 3D Dot Game Heroes, you can create custom characters too.

Classic Dungeon also supports ad-hoc connectivity for versus and cooperative dungeon crawling. The game comes out in Japan as a retail release and PlayStation Store download on February 18.
