Commenting On The Future Of Comments

Some of you may have already caught on to this, but we revamped the commenting system at Siliconera over the weekend.

I’ve been meaning to introduce advanced features like profiles and avatars in the comment system for a long time. However, I liked Siliconera’s open comment system where anyone can leave a comment without jumping over hurdles like registering for an account. Balancing these two features plus a host of technical problems like existing comments were issues, issues that Disqus solved so we’re adopting it.

With Disqus anyone can set up a profile that displays an avatar and tracks comments. You can even claim all your existing comments on Siliconera by hovering over your name from a previous or new comment and clicking on “unclaimed profile”. After you hit this button you’ll be taken to a Disqus page where you can claim your profile by entering the e-mail address you entered here at Siliconera.

Don’t want to set up a profile? That’s fine. You can continue commenting as usual, but it would be nice if you set a profile up in the future! When you set up an account you can build your reputation, start a friend list, and edit your comments.

My favorite part of Disqus is you can thread comments. Hit on “reply” instead of post and you can post a comment underneath a parent comment. Finally, no more “@ someone” comments in the middle of discussions!

This doesn’t happen often here, but if you see a comment that you feel is offensive, trolling, or plain old spam hit “flag” to alert us. See an awesome comment? Give out points it to boost that commenter’s repuation. Disqus allows for easier moderation which will be used to shape Siliconera into a place for intelligent discussion about video games.

I hope everyone enjoys this transition and I would love to hear your comments about it below.

– Spencer
