There’s been some buzz about Nintendo’s MP3 Player that was released in Europe, but I’m disappointed with it. The device really is a stripped down version of the Play-Yan, a media player that was released in Japan a year and a half ago. The main difference is the Play-Yan can play movie files plus MP3s. You need to do some minor video converting with the 3GP converter, but once you’re done you can watch movies on the DS. Seriously, if you’re going to shell out $50 to get the Nintendo MP3 player you mind as well put down an extra $20 for video too. I’ve had my Play-Yan for a while and it’s come in handy while flying. I can shove a bunch of Aqua Teen Hungerforce episodes on it and have spare room for MP3s to listen to when I’m waiting for a train. I can see why Nintendo decided to release the device without video functionality, some people will find converting a pain and movies don’t come out crystal clear like on the PSP. However if you’re even a little techno savvy don’t be fooled, the Play-Yan is worth the little extra cash.
